Nemours is seeking an Epilepsy Program Coordinator (Full-Time), to join our team in Orlando, Florida.

The Epilepsy Program Coordinator is responsible for an area of specialized nursing practice which Includes multidisciplinary clinic engagement, phone triage, scheduling questions, letters, relaying imaging findings after discussing with providers, and responding to Nemours portal messages. The program coordinator will develop, organize, and supervise the delivery of support and educational programs and disease specific clinics for patients and caregivers within neurosciences. Candidates should have excellent time management skills, be a proactive worker, work well in a team environment, and possess the desire to engage in neurology patient care and coordination. This position is responsible for promoting a patient and family centered model of care. The position will also be responsible for promoting the shared governance model for Nemours nursing and positive role modeling the Nemours standards of behavior and values. The program coordinator is responsible for maintaining compliance with all regulatory and patient safety practices for the designated location/department.

The program coordinator is responsible for coordinating the care of patients with complex epilepsy followed by several of our neurologists and APPs. The coordinator would provide direct and indirect patient care in collaboration with the medical and nursing staff for patients and families followed by these subspecialty teams including services in the epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) and outpatient care setting. The coordinators of the focuses will be patient workflow to the EMU and epilepsy surgery. The coordinator will play a critical role in building the epilepsy program.


  • Performs ongoing assessment and evaluation of patient progress and revision of interdisciplinary plan of care related to patient needs. identifies patient/family need for further resources and initiates appropriate teaching and/or referrals.
  • Participates in responding to patient phone calls. Explains treatment regimens to patient/family after having discussed with the physician or advanced practice provider.
  • Demonstrates ability to share clinical knowledge with other members of the health care team; works collaboratively to share subspecialty knowledge.
  • Acts as a liaison between families and members of the health care team.
  • Utilizes specialized body of knowledge and technical skills in nursing practice related to subspecialty in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy and protocol.
  • Participates in the development of standards of care, education materials, and programs for the specialty patient population.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the care of all ages: neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, and adults.
  • Recognizes and identifies own learning needs and responsibility for continual development; strives to increase knowledge and identifies goals for professional growth.
  • Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality/Process Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations, and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation.
  • Acts as the liaison between patients, their families, and members of the health care team. Coordinates clinic visits and pre-operative studies for patients scheduled for the epilepsy surgery in collaboration with neurosurgeon and surgical epileptologists.
  • Schedules the pre surgical tests including MRI, PET, SPECT, WADA and functional MRI and others as needed.
  • Participates in inpatient rounds and coordinates the outpatient follow up.
  • Manage the list of patients for pre-surgical work up and epilepsy surgery, responsible for tracking the pre-surgical patients' test and follow ups and epilepsy surgery. Schedules epilepsy surgery conferences.
  • Responsible for coordination of discharge follow up in collaboration with the patient's physicians and APRN/PA's.
  • In collaboration with patient's physicians and other providers, explains treatment regime to patients/families, i.e. pre-procedure instructions and admission process.
  • Participates in research protocols and data collection in support of epilepsy research including data collection and input as needed.
  • Responsible for collecting the data needed for USNWR report.
  • Inpatient rounding in the EMU on phase 1 and phase 2 patients, and surgical patients.
  • Participates in the intractable epilepsy and epilepsy surgical clinic.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required.
  • State of Florida RN License or compact RN License required.
  • EMU Care Certification will be required within one (1) year of start date.
