Position Title: Sr. Research Machinist

Position summary:

This position is responsible for the daily operation of the College of Marine Science machine shop and supervision of machine shop staff. The mission of which is to support the teaching and research goals of the college.

Job Duties:


  • Responsible for oversight and management of the machine shop budget and billing operations. Will work with the college budget office to manage the Machine Shop auxiliary account. Generate estimates and invoices related to design, construction, and delivery of research instrumentation and equipment. Responsible for the purchase, maintenance, and repair of all shop machinery and equipment.
  • Establish and develop relationships with outside organizations in the public and private sectors to generate interdisciplinary research and/or join venture initiatives. Will also develop relationships with internal customers within College of Marine Science and other university departments to generate new and ongoing business.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the machine shop, ensuring that all work is completed on time, to specification, and within budget. Supervision of all shop employees and users, determine workflow, schedules, and project timelines. Uphold all health and safety regulations for maintaining a safe working environment, train staff and shop users on proper usage of equipment and tools.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, students, and outside entities to provide critical technical advice, design and oversight for research projects that require machine shop expertise. Designs and constructs experimental oceanographic research instruments and equipment from verbal orders, blueprints, sketches and/or drawings when available. Determine methods, materials, and equipment that may be required for project completion.
  • Employs the use of specialized equipment such as welders, inert gas cutting (TIG & MIG, Plasma ARC cutting), acetylene torch, CNC milling, and other related equipment in the course of fulfilling the project goals.
  • Operates lathes, vertical milling machines, drill presses, surface grinders, band saw, sheet metal shears, sheet metal brakes, punch presses, and other machine shop tools. Working to precision tolerances using micrometers, calipers, squares, depth micrometers, dial indicators, gauge blocks, sine bars, heigh gauges, and surface plates used in the fabrication of field and laboratory gear and instruments.


Qualifications:

Minimum: This position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and vocational training or an approved apprenticeship program in machine shop operations and 4 years of position related experience.

Preferred: Experience working in a marine research environment is highly preferred.
