Job Overview

This is a hands-on working Shipping Supervisor position that collaborates with other plant supervisors and managers to coordinate and oversee all outbound and some inbound shipments. Manage shipping operations to support delivery timelines and customer satisfaction goals. Develops and implements shipping procedures to ensure shipments are packaged according to customer and customer specifications while ensuring appropriate but cost-effective packaging methods and materials.

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Manage all outbound and some inbound shipments, including regional, out-of-state and international, utilizing company specific software, management of packaging materials inventories, packaging of product to be shipped, and arrangement of transportation services. Ensure that all warehousing and shipment areas are organized, safe and secured.

  • Set and promote departmental goals, objectives and tasks that support outbound deliveries of products and ensure the effective delivery of department services. Develop and implement policies and procedures that are consistent with policies, goals and desired outcomes.

  • Oversee all departmental documentation. Ongoing collaboration with other managers and administrative staff that supports operations and customer relations, while ensuring that all necessary documentation is maintained and delivered to other departments complete, correct and on time.
  • Oversee external and internal customer service as it relates to shipping and receiving operations and ensure compliance with procedures, protocols, best-practices and applicable mandates.
  • Collaborate in maintaining relationships with external entities such as customer representatives, vendors, contractors and other partners.

  • Develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure effective operations and address identified trends and issues and that are compliant with ISO in promoting quality driven processes.
  • Assist in the management of department budget including identifying cost-effective and compliant initiatives, investments deployment of resources, sourcing, and process changes.
  • Reports on a regular basis to the plant/general manager, regarding assigned administrative and operational responsibilities, staff issues, projects; identify any outstanding issues, determine and recommend appropriate remedies.
  • Perform full supervisory duties and responsibilities over the assigned staff including: work plan, assignments and priorities assignments; assign appropriate work schedules and approves leave; recruitment; training, development and mentoring; performance reviews; engagement and recognition activities; advocate for department and staff; coaching and counseling; corrective actions; promotes communication and a safe working environment; and assessing, recommending and executing employment actions.
  • Perform shipping and receiving duties to support operations such as: shipping documentation; assemble customer orders from stock, prepare shipments and place orders on pallets and relocate orders to a holding area or shipping department; utilize varied of equipment such as forklift, dolly and pallet-jack to move and prepare shipments. May deliver products to regional customers.
  • Analyzes relevant data for significant trends and stays current on best practices and trends related to services as they affect the department and Elkhart operations.
  • Regular reporting and presentations that includes integrating information from multiple sources, provides technical support to various groups as assigned, and provides information for advisory boards and elected officials.
  • Attends seminars, training, conferences, and other meetings as assigned. Represents Great Rivers in a wide variety of local/regional meetings, work groups, committees, task forces and other venues as assigned.
  • Attends, leads, and participates in staff meetings.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned by the supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • General proficiency in computer use and applications commonly used or applied in this field/trade/position, and Microsoft Office applications. Develop proficiency with company specific software and systems.
  • Possess/develop working knowledge of company products, production methods, warranties, and customer needs. Possess/develop the knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, risk management, and modern best practices in shipping and receiving primarily related to a manufacturing environment.
  • Leadership skills to effectively implement and promote compliance and alignment of shipping department objectives to
  • Flexible to adjust to change and address non-routine or emergency situations. Manage constant time-sensitive work demands that require good time and task management and prioritizing.

  • Effectively work in a multi-task environment, prioritizing tasks properly, and completing tasks/projects in a timely manner.

  • Develop and maintain effective working relations with peers, clients, other agencies, contracted providers, and the public. Collaboratively work in a team setting to promote the value of customer service, total quality and safety.

  • Work well independently, learn quickly and adjust work assignments in response to system changes.
  • Exercises good judgement and maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with utmost discretion.

Education and Experience


  • Associates degree in Logistics or a closely related field and a minimum of 3 years of experience in a complex Shipping and Receiving Department. Or, a combination of education, training, knowledge and experience that would ensure the successful performance of the position's duties.

Working Conditions


  • Physical ability to sit/stand at a workstation for extended periods of time, as well as extended stand/walk.
  • Physical ability to use office equipment. Extended exposure to work using the computers and staring at monitors. Attention to detail and the ability to concentrate for extended periods of time.
  • Exposure to work environment common to plastics manufacturing including dust and high noise prone environment.
  • Operate equipment and tools common to shipping/receiving and warehouse environments and equipment common to shipping/receiving and warehouse environments
  • Job requires work hours that may exceed 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, work on weekends or evenings, and may include meetings past normal business hours, and a flexible schedule to accommodate department management and operations.
  • Drive and travel for work activities or attend training, seminars or represent the organization at meetings. Travel may include travel/commute within our service region and out-of-town travel, as well at delivery of products.
  • Follow, comply and enforce EPI policies and procedures, as well as organizational and department goals and objectives.
  • May need to deal with sensitive as well as hostile or disagreeable situations.
  • Manage the pressures of multiple priorities, the need to work through competing interests and priorities, deal with interruptions, as well as dealing with challenging and sensitive situations.
