Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Product Design Engineer – Cable Assemblies is responsible for interpreting customer electrical requirements and designing and developing cables assembly technical documentation including 2D drawings, test specifications, and Bill of Materials (BOM). The Product Design Engineer – Cable Assemblies is also responsible for working with Manufacturing Engineering to support technical production issues and with Product Management to provide cost estimates for quoting.
Responsibilities
Design wire harness drawings based on electrical, mechanical, and environmental requirements
Able to select of connectors, back shells, boots, wire, braid, terminals, etc. to performance requirements
Develop and maintain bill of materials
Prepare and release manufacturing assembly drawings and bills of materials (BOMs).
Initiate and support drawing changes (ECNs, impact assessments, material dispositions)
Support production with manufacturing issues, supplier issues, quality issues, etc. that affect the cable assembly drawings
Prepare labor and material cost estimates for new cable assemblies. Identify non-recurring engineering (NRE) and equipment needs.
Design overmolded transitions and interface with mold designers to facilitate production.
Develop electrical test plans that meet customer performance requirements
Support procurement in alternate component selections and alternate sourcing.
Interface directly with customer technical personnel to interpret design requirements.
Perform contract review on new revisions to customer specifications
Engineering product setup, design, and lifecycle management
Engineering BOM creation, documentation creation and updates
Multi-functional team member representing Product Engineering
Product Testing/Qualification support and overview within Product Evaluation Lab
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent technical degree
5 years minimum experience in Mil/Aero cable assembly product design/manufacturing
Experienced in creation of cable assembly drawings and documentation
Knowledge of cable assembly related MIL/IPC workmanship and performance standards (e.g., IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC-610, NASA 8739.4, SAE-AS50881)
Experience interfacing with wiring diagrams, systems, and EMI/EMC requirements.
Basic knowledge of cable and harness components, connectors, wires and cables, plus crimping tools, automatic, semi-automatic and hand tools.
Experience with 3D CAD software (Creo, Solidworks, NX, or similar)
ASME Y14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing, including GD&T
Ability to manage multiple tasks to drive results
Highly self-motivated and a willingness to make a difference and learn
Excellent communication skills and ability to work with different departments.
Working knowledge of MS Office products such as Excel, Word etc...
The ability to travel periodically (up to 10%)
US Citizenship - This position requires visibility to export documents, as it supports the NO FORN CVN project.
Preferred
Broad experience in cable assembly design and the Aerospace & Defense industry.
CREO Parametric 3D Modeling/Documentation experience
Extensive knowledge in the manufacturing processes required to fabricate cable assemblies
Experience in both copper and fiber optics cable assembly design and production.
Experience in Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Manufacturability (DfM), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Design of Experiments (DOE), and Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) principles.
