Job Description:




Budget Title: Lead Programmer/Analyst (SL-3)




Salary: $65,000 - $80,000




Student Affairs Assessment and Solutions for Engagement (SAASE) at Binghamton University is seeking a Data Solutions Developer to join the office. SAASE supports a dynamic Division of Student Affairs by building a data infrastructure, designing assessment, and developing analysis that enhances the co-curricular experience of Binghamton's diverse student population. The work of the office includes traditional assessment as well as data analytics, data visualization, and developing statistical models and analysis to support major divisional initiatives. The successful candidate will work to improve the data infrastructure of the division by building data integrations that pull data from multiple systems and developing, deploying, and maintaining data applications that help users explore, understand, and leverage that data for strategic decision making.




Duties and responsibilities include:





  • Work with the Director of SAASE and divisional partners to build and improve the data infrastructure for the Division of Student Affairs.

  • Understand the data housed in various systems within the division of student affairs and how it relates to other university data and systems on campus.

  • Develop processes that improve data access and availability across units and systems.

  • Develop and implement data management processes and procedures to ensure data accuracy, security, and proper use within the division.

  • Develop software processes which consume real-time data exposed via vendor APIs and update a local data model (database) to reflect current and accurate information spanning a variety of vendor systems.

  • Administer and manage a Linux server to house and run R/Python scripts, scheduled jobs, and Shiny apps.

  • Maintain server environment for data applications, including required packages, libraries, compilers, and other dependencies. Ensure proper directory structure and permissions for hosted apps and monitor, detect, and troubleshoot issues.

  • Develop, deploy, and maintain flexible data applications and dashboards that streamline reporting for the office/division.

  • Assist with developing and maintaining a Student Affairs data hub that brings together key data from various systems for analytical and reporting purposes.

  • Build and maintain necessary documentation, Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERD), and metadata.






Requirements:





  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology or a related field

  • Ability to understand and translate different data needs to operational, technical, and analytical staff

  • Demonstrated ability to use various data extraction tools and methods (SOAP, REST, RPC, GraphQL, XML, JSON, etc.)

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and maintain automated ETL processes

  • Proficient to strong knowledge of Python and SQL

  • Experience with Linux web server configuration and administration

  • Familiarity with using Linux command line for system configuration, package management, and data application deployment

  • Experience developing and deploying data applications, dashboards, and scheduled reports using R, Python, or a similar programming language

  • Strong understanding of relational databases and various data structures

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and present data concepts in a clear and concise fashion to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Strong oral and written communication skills




Preferred Qualifications:





  • One or more years of professional or paraprofessional experience (GA/internship)

  • Experience developing, deploying, and maintaining Shiny apps and other dashboards using R and/or Python

  • Experience using the R programming language to manipulate data and develop reproducible reports, data summaries, and visualization

  • Experience in database design, database administration, and data normalization

  • Experience implementing and maintaining Posit Connect on a Linux Server

  • Recent graduates, or those who will graduate in May are encouraged to apply
