We are seeking a Research Assistant / Construction Materials Testing Technician to support experimental testing activities, laboratory maintenance, and day-to-day operations. Responsibilities include specimen fabrication, sampling, testing, data recording, and analysis as part of a collaborative research team. Comprehensive training and technical support will be provided. Candidates must adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and laboratory policies. This role is integral to the Department and College of Engineering's research and development (R&D) initiatives and scientific investigations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Perform laboratory tests to generate accurate and reliable data for scientific research.
Fabricate test specimens using materials such as resin, carbon fiber, glass fiber, wood, concrete, plastic, and steel.
Operate power tools to complete assigned tasks.
Execute routine procedures with precision, following established methodologies.
Use standard laboratory equipment, including test frames, hydraulic actuators, and balances.
Assist with laboratory equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked laboratory environment.
Record and occasionally interpret test results for presentation to senior staff.
Use computers and software to create graphs and perform mathematical analyses.
Conduct research on topics relevant to ongoing studies.
Strictly adhere to health and safety guidelines and perform regular safety checks.
Provide daily progress updates and conduct end-of-day laboratory walkthroughs.
Proactively report potential delays or issues and offer recommendations to ensure smooth operations.
Consistently practice good housekeeping in the laboratory.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Familiarity with materials preparation and testing procedures.
Strong organizational, record-keeping, and communication skills.
Ability to operate and troubleshoot technical equipment, scientific instruments, and computer software.
Education Requirements.
High School Degree with minimum of 2 years of work experience. Preferred background in construction, engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical, or architectural), or laboratory work.
Work Experience
At least two years of relevant experience in fields such as civil engineering, mechanical engineering, construction, materials science laboratories, or the concrete
industry. Experience as a workshop or machinist technician is a plus. A combination of education, certifications, and/or relevant work experience will also be considered. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience.
