IU School of Medicine Bloomington provides individualized education in medicine and the biomedical sciences to undergraduate, graduate and medical students, supports research to expand our knowledge about human health and disease, and collaborates with other health sciences and community partners to improve the health of our community.



Job Summary



Indiana University School of Medicine-Bloomington is seeking interested applicants for our Patient Model positions in the Interprofessional Simulation Center. Patient Models may also undergo non-invasive imaging examinations using ultrasound. This involves having a gel applied to the skin and an ultrasound probe placed on the skin with slight pressure. This procedure may require skin to be exposed including chest, abdomen, neck, legs, and arms.


Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Works with medical students and other health professions learners for them to practice non-invasive physical assessments, including but not limited to:

    • Auscultation (listening with a stethoscope) to heart, lungs, and bowels.

    • Eye examinations using an ophthalmoscope.

    • Ear examinations using an otoscope.

    • Physical examinations including inspection (looking) of the skin, palpation (feeling or pressing on the abdomen, neck, or chest), and percussion (tapping) of the chest, abdomen, and lower back.

    • Inspection of the oral cavity (mouth and tongue) using a tongue depressor.

    • Conduct range of motion testing and extremity strength (moving arms, legs, hands, feet, and head/neck)

    • Have vital signs taken including pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oral temperature, and pulse oximeter (external finger instrument)

    • Reflex testing (tapping with a small rubber mallet)



  • Works with medical students and other health professions learners for learners to practice history taking and interviewing skills. Model patients will be themselves and participate in the interview using their own personal history. While these interviews are confidential and learners are aware of the need for confidentiality, model patients may share only information they are comfortable sharing.

  • Some examinations will require the Model Patient to wear a hospital gown overtop underwear.

  • Proficient verbal communications skills.

  • Must be dependable and punctual.

  • Work in a professional manner with learners and faculty.

  • Be comfortable having repeated physical examination maneuvers performed on self.




Working Conditions / Demands



Work is intermittent, dependent on the needs of the curriculum.



Additional Information



MODEL PATIENTS WILL BE ADVISED OF THE TYPE OF EXAMINATION AHEAD OF SCHEDULING AND HAVE THE ABILITY TO REFUSE TO PARTICIPATE.


Examinations WILL NOT include intimate examinations (male testicular and prostate, female, breast and pelvic).


Male subjects will need to wear athletic shorts to expose body areas while female subjects will wear athletic shorts and sports bras. All activities are conducted in rooms out of the public view with small student groups accompanied by faculty.

Work will be daytime, Monday through Friday, with rare weekend and evening needs.
