JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides appropriate education for customers, including but not limited to, patients, families, providers, and community members. This may include certain forms of education such as teaching the patients and their family various techniques and exercises, as well as various aspects of rehabilitation and home care to help the patient better care for himself at home.
Performs proper patient assessment utilizing proper information from the patient’s medical record, patient, or provider and by performing appropriate physical and functional evaluations such as blood pressure, resting and exercise pulse oximetry, respiratory rate and heart rate. Evaluates need for and properly performs diagnostic procedures which may include ECG testing/monitoring, cardiopulmonary stress test, simple spirometry, and ABG sampling/analysis.
Maintains equipment, including scheduled, preventative, and diagnostic maintenance as outlined in Laboratory procedures and manufacturer user manuals. Independently performs quality control procedures, documents results, and investigates and resolves abnormal results, with appropriate supervisory notification of activity. Performs oxygen rounds, emergency rounds as scheduled, accurately noting the operation and function of equipment and makes changes as necessary to maintain proper equipment function.
Develops, documents, updates, and communicates an effective and appropriate treatment plan. This may include items such as development of long and short-term goals, exercise prescription, home/maintenance exercise prescription and patient education needs.
Performs a variety of procedures which may include, but are not limited to, IPPB, humidity aerosol therapy with and without medication, postural drainage and percussion and incentive spirometry. Administers aerosolized drugs prescribed by providers. Monitors patients for adverse reactions, recognizes them, responds accordingly, including assisting the patient, stopping therapy and notifying nursing or provider if necessary.
Appropriately documents in the computer and patient charts.
Responds to all Code Blue situations. Provides airway management, emergency ventilator care and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Sets up and adjusts continuous mechanical ventilation, making frequent checks of equipment and patient to maintain proper ventilator function.
Implements infection control processes and has knowledge of septic techniques and isolation procedures. Properly handles and cleans contaminated equipment.
Participates in Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance activities as determined by Administration including JMH operations improvement. Evaluates current practice and makes appropriate suggestions to improve productivity and enhance expense reduction to the Manager; assists in the evaluation of new equipment; monitors the purchasing of supplies and inventory control.
Provides timely and effective communication to all customers including technical guidance as it relates to procedures and operations.
Attends meetings inside and outside of the hospital as designated. Participates in professional activities and continuing education to maintain professional expertise.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and Johnson Memorial Health policies and procedures including Blood and Body Substance Precautions.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist required. BLS or CPR for Healthcare Providers, and ACLS or ALS certification must be obtained by the end of the employee’s 90-day orientation period. Experience in a hospital or Outpatient (rehab) setting, blood gas procurement and ventilator management experience preferred.
