The Public Art and Cultural Heritage Collection of University Collections stewards Indiana University's thousands of 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, decorative, and other miscellaneous art objects that are housed outside of Indiana University museums but are located on campus grounds across all IU campuses.
Job Summary
other artifact-related processes performed so that the documentation of any treatment or changes to the condition of items are noted. This position will require the Exhibition Assistant to work independently and to problem solve complex issues related to framing, mounting, or storing items that may be of unusual shapes and sizes. The position will also require the use of judgment to create efficient workflows for materials care.
Department Specific Responsibilities
Maintains artworks and collections items, performs regular cleaning on materials, and frames, mats, and builds specialized housing for art and objects.
Assists in exhibit installation and collaborates with the collection team in determining vendors, scheduling, timeline requirements, and installation needs.
Helps to maintain proper condition of exhibited items.
Maintains the framing workshop and clean workroom for Public Art and Cultural Heritage.
Works with the registrar of Public Art and Cultural Heritage in tracking and documenting locations of installed pieces and maintaining frame condition information.
Tends to exhibited artwork housings that are in need of cleaning, refurbishing, and touch-ups as needed.
Documents condition and processes undertaken to care for Public Art and Cultural Heritage collection items.
Other Public Art and University Collections duties as assigned.
Performs other University Collections-related duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities
Responsible for the maintenance and conservation of artwork and museum artifacts, including cleaning, reframing, rematting, reglazing, and building housing.
Assists with preparation of installation of exhibits and frequently interacts with other Museum Services staff and/or outside vendors to determine scheduling, installation needs, resource needs, and timeline.
Maintains workshop, including upkeep and routine inspection and maintenance of equipment. Repairs or upgrades equipment as needed.
Assists with collection management efforts and may assist with the installation of large projects, performing inventory, and moving art and museum artifacts.
Makes ongoing technical and spatial adjustments to exhibits after initial installation. Ensures proper condition of artwork and museum artifacts, escalating issues to appropriate staff as needed.
Assists with a variety of museum needs, including creation of work orders, consulting on museum lighting needs, and participation in special projects.
Documents processes and may contribute to process improvement; provides guidance to student or temporary staff.

EDUCATION

High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires both sedentary work and the ability to move about for long periods of time. It also requires good communication skills and the ability to use tools, operate machinery, and complete construction projects with precision and accuracy. The ability to move heavy objects, provide support for heavy objects and perform strenuous labor is required. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential tasks with or without an accommodation.
