3D Systems, a pioneer in the 3D printing industry for over 30 years, continues to lead additive manufacturing across a range of technologies and applications. We are seeking a skilled Materials Characterization Analyst to conduct in-depth analysis and characterization of additive manufacturing materials for R&D support and material launches. In this role, you will collaborate with the materials characterization team, in the lab and globally, to support product development, troubleshoot printing challenges, and optimize material properties for healthcare, automotive, aerospace, and durable good sectors.
What Success Looks Like
The Materials Characterization Analyst will play a key role in evaluating and analyzing polymer materials for additive manufacturing applications. The role is an integral part of the Materials R&D division of 3D Systems and will work closely with formulators, scientists, and engineers throughout the company. This position is responsible for conductive detailed characterization of polymer materials across the printing technologies in the 3D Systems portfolio including photopolymerization, selective laser sintering, material jetting, and more. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of mechanical, thermal, and thermos-mechanical testing methods and standards, particularly as applied to UV-curable thermosets.
What You Will Do
Conduct Material Characterization: Utilize techniques such as thermomechanical analysis (TGA, DMA, DSC, TMA), chemical compatibility analysis, and mechanical testing (tension, flexure, and compression) to evaluate materials.
Sample Preparation and Testing: Prepare and test samples according to established procedures, ensuring compliance with laboratory safety standards and ASTM or ISO methods.
Data Analysis and Interpretation: Analyze and interpret data to assess material properties, quality, and performance characteristics.
Documentation: Accurately document experimental results and maintain comprehensive records of procedures, findings, and analyses.
Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with engineers and scientists from various disciplines to support product development, process selection, safety, technical datasheet generation, and troubleshooting.
Equipment Maintenance: Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Stay Informed on Advancements: Keep up with the latest advancements in materials characterization technologies and methodologies, applying new techniques or developing methods as needed.
Method Development: Participate in the development and optimization of processing and characterization techniques.
What You Bring to the Table
Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field required.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with analytical instruments, including but not limited to thermal and thermomechanical analysis techniques.
Strong understanding of material properties, characterization techniques, and their applications in real-world scenarios.
Proficient in data analysis and interpretation, with experience using software tools for statistical analysis and data presentation.
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to conduct independent research while also working collaboratively in a team setting.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly and effectively.
Skills That Make You Stand Out
Previous experience in a materials characterization role within an industrial or research setting.
Knowledge of statistical analysis methods and software.
Experience with sample preparation techniques and familiarity with laboratory safety protocols.
Basic programming skills for automating data acquisition and analysis processes.
Interest and experience in additive manufacturing, CAD software (e.g., SOLIDWORKS), or experimental apparatus design and construction
Knowledge of analytical methods like FT-IR, rheology, and mass spectrometry.
