Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:



AEL is seeking a Specimen Management Department (SMD) Non-Technical Supervisor for 2nd shift who is detail oriented, process focused and can thrive in a fast-paced, patient focused and challenging environment. The SMD Non-Technical Supervisor assists the SMD Manager in supervision and coordination of work activities in SMD using established policies and procedures to advance the goals and objectives of the department and AEL. Under the direct supervision of the SMD Manager, the supervisor is responsible for the shift that has been assigned, on site 8 hours/day, 5 days/week. At times, it is understood that some time outside of the normal scheduled hours may be required, on an as needed basis, to ensure the stability of the department.

In this role, you will:



  • Oversees training, scheduling, and assigning tasks using established policies, procedures and methods to facilitate activities of SMD in coordination with the SMD Team Leaders. Assists the SMD manager in the evaluation of competency of all SMD personnel using the SMD competency program.

  • Monitors, counsels, and recommends discipline of employees in the section using established policies and procedures to assist management in reaching productivity goals and reducing errors in the department. Assists the SMD manager in the evaluation of employees for annual performance reviews.

  • Assures personal and professional development of employees and self-development to meet personal goals as well as the goals of the department and SMD.

  • Oversees and monitors daily, weekend, and holiday schedules to ensure a smooth transition between shifts and all areas are covered appropriately.

  • Evaluates processes and protocols for efficiency and accuracy and makes recommendations for process improvements.

  • Assures policies and procedures are properly maintained and executed. Perform related accountabilities/responsibilities as required or directed.

  • Assures effective shift to shift communication of AEL and the SMD policies, procedures and other relevant information to staff members.

  • Monitors required daily reports that pertain to the SMD department in an effort to recognize, report, and resolve any issues pertaining to the SMD department. Elevate issues to appropriate contacts for resolution.

  • Obtain patient information, and give specimen status using interpersonal communication and organizational skills to assure good customer response.

  • Assures efficient operation of SMD by planning and implementing efficient resource management including general, financial, operations and personnel management to meet the financial goals of the department.




All you need is:



  • No license or certifications are required for this position

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Administration or closely related non-technical field preferred.

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards

  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures

  • Knowledge of processing specimen procedures



  • Strong supervisory skills are required

  • Must have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills

  • Must have good working knowledge of personal computers especially with regard to Email, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access programs



  • A minimum of 3 years of non-technical experience including a minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience is strongly preferred
