This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU]

The job of Substation Designer requires an individual to be self-motivated with an interest and/ or ability to assist in the development of engineering designs, equipment and standards for the Substation Design Engineering group within FirstEnergy. This position will work within a staff of engineers, designers, survey crews, drafters and specialists, both internal and external, engaged in a wide variety of engineering design activities, from the request for project estimation through conceptual and detailed design development, equipment acquisition, construction and finally record update. This position will report on the progress of design projects on a proactive basis. This position must provide support to Substation Regional Field Personnel, Planning and System Protection, Real Estate, Project Management and Construction crews verifying that safety standards are followed.


Responsibilities include:

  • Developing designs for transmission and distribution substation projects from scope documents, protection specifications, engineering sketches and /or verbal instructions.
  • Review estimates for substation projects
  • Preparing 3D AutoCAD drawings and bill of materials for substation projects
  • Creating layouts, sketches and plans for substation physical equipment. Evaluating the arrangement and mounting of equipment to ensure compliance with NESC requirements including electrical clearances as well as taking into employee access and maintenance needs and abilities for future expansion.
  • Assisting in the development or revision of substation electrical one-lines, and AC and DC schematics drawings
  • Developing detailed wiring diagrams from schematics
  • Developing conduit and raceway layouts and cable schedules
  • Performing design calculations including battery and charger sizing, voltage drop and short circuit calculations, and conduit fill calculations
  • Assisting engineers with material reviews and prepare approval letters for vendor equipment drawings including large power transformers, high voltage circuit breakers, and high voltage capacitor banks
  • Preparing drafts for purchase requisitions and blanket releases for substation projects
  • Coordinating with technical personnel to gather and record data for substation design projects and complete as-built and record print revisions from marked drawings
  • Supporting communication across business units regarding project needs
  • Assisting in researching and exploring new technologies that will effectively enable work processes to be automated increasing efficiencies while decreasing the risk of human error.
  • Contributing to a safe environment for substation field personnel, co-workers, contractors and the general public.
  • Providing support to employees to assist in their learning of standards, procedures, designs, and associated issues and assisting in ensuring standards and equipment specifications are up-to-date and accurate.
  • Providing assistance during emergencies and storm related activities. Storm response duties may include time out of the office for extended stays.

Qualifications include:

  • 2- or 4-year degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology, or Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology is required.
  • Minimum 0-3 years of related design experience is required.
  • Working knowledge of applicable computer software necessary to fulfill job duties including Microsoft Office. Knowledge of FileNet, WinlGS, 2D & 3D Computer-Aided Design, Cascade and SAP a plus but not a requirement.
  • Valid driver's license is required
  • Must embrace a safety culture and maintain a safe work environment for co-workers and the public
  • Must be able to assist on multiple projects simultaneously and be able to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines, unexpected developments, changes in project scope, budget constraints, unforeseen field problems and demands on time for work assignments
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and develop and maintain relationships across FE, with outside firms, and manufacturers tto facilitate the cooperation needed to complete assigned tasks and that will inspire others to achieve, or exceed, goals
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in teams to coordinate designs with other FirstEnergy areas of responsibility including Planning and Protection, Project Management, Maintenance, Real Estate and Construction, as well as the Regional operating companies
  • Ability to make practical recommendations without undue delay and based on the best information available at the time that the decision must be made
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with good verbal and written skills, to providing comprehensive project status reports, clear and concise correspondence, and accurate information
  • Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem-solving skills
  • Must be willing to travel throughout the FE service territory as needed to support substation walkdowns, to gather site information, and to support storm response needs
