Pay Grade: $28.00 per hour (grant-funded) / 6-12 hours per week

JOB SUMMARY


The Adult Education Transitions Navigator works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to facilitate the transition of adult education learners at Carroll Community College (CCC) to academic credit programs, workforce training, or the workforce. The Transitions Navigator assists both adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and GED graduates in the identification of career or college goals, provides intentional case management of transitioning learners, and supports and encourages students as they transition into a career and/or post-secondary education. Assistance includes personal connections to appropriate campus representatives (i.e., the WBCE Workforce Navigator, admissions/advising/financial aid staff, Career Development office). The Transitions Navigator will collaborate with and align counseling and support activities to services already provided by Carroll Community College, Carroll County Workforce Development (CCWD) and the core Workforce Investment & Opportunity Act (WIOA) partners in Carroll County. This position reports to the Director, Adult Education and Literacy Services.




ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:



  • Meet with adult education students one-on-one and/or in groups to determine career and academic goals and develop an educational plan, including identification of student assets, barriers, and support services.

  • Provide individual, intentional, and proactive goals counseling to students ready for transition.

  • Prepare and accompany students to career-related activities such as job fairs and information sessions.

  • Document student progress toward goals and communicate that information to appropriate grant, college, and/or partner agency staff.

  • Assist skilled immigrants to connect with foreign diploma/degree/credential evaluation and paths to employment in the United States.

  • In coordination with appropriate college personnel, assist students in navigating the course catalog, registration and enrollment procedures, financial aid, and student services to ensure a seamless transition.

  • Maintain excellent working relationships with college admissions and advising staff, WIOA partner agencies, and community agencies.

  • Coordinate additional activities to provide students exposure to career and college resources, including transitions lessons/activities that can be used in the classroom (e.g., online career exploration).

  • Attend Transitions Navigator Community of Practice Meetings sponsored by the grantee.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:



  • Bachelor's degree

  • Work experience in an employment/training, workforce/career development, or academic counseling setting

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent communication (oral and writing) and interpersonal skills

  • Available to travel locally and work evening hours (Monday - Thursday 5-8 pm)

  • Valid driver's license with the ability to transport students using college van

  • Must be positive, cooperative and supportive




PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Experience in an Adult Education and Family Literacy Services (AEFLA) funded adult education program

  • Experience working with at-risk students in a high school, community college, or other setting

  • Bilingual Spanish/English, Ukrainian/English, Russian/English, Uzbek/English, or French/English

  • Experience assisting skilled immigrants to evaluate foreign degrees/credentials and find employment in the United States

  • Knowledge of CASAS assessments and LACES data elements




PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The work is normally sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:



  • Hear/talk/communicate - Must be able to exchange information and communicate

  • Visual Acuity/ability to perceive or detect surroundings

  • Mental acuity - Able to focus, concentrate, understand and convey subject matter

  • Repetitive motion (i.e. keyboarding)

  • Stand/sit/walk/able to move or traverse from one area to another




WORK ENVIRONMENT:


College campus, direct contact with diverse students, staff, faculty and the general public in classrooms, common and shared areas, offices, and campus environments. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office, meeting, and training rooms. Use of safe workplace practices with office equipment; computers for data entry and word processing with some highly technical applications and new technology systems; avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire and building safety regulations and all college policies. Observance of college vehicle policies and laws when/if driving a college vehicle. Travel to off-site locations. Work schedule requires two-four nights per week; 6 - 12 hours per week.
