Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Revenue (DOR) is seeking an organized, self-motivated individual to join our Legal Section as a Bankruptcy and Probate Tax Collections Agent. This individual works within established procedures and guidelines of DOR and the Bankruptcy and Probate Code to collect non-filed and unpaid tax accounts; reports bankruptcy fraud to a supervisor and team leader; guides other teammates on the Bankruptcy Code as it relates to state tax collection; and refers cases to and receives guidance from DOR's Special Assistant Attorney Generals.

Job Duties include:
1. Investigate the liabilities of decedents and debtors.
2. Contact taxpayers, permitholders and attorneys for non-filed and unpaid returns.
3. Communicate with DOR teammates concerning the status of bankruptcy and probate matters.
4. Receive, review and make decisions on the sufficiency of plans filed in the Bankruptcy Court.
5. Answer complex questions regarding regulations in the various tax programs and work in an advisory capacity to other revenue agents with regard to the Bankruptcy Code.
6. Review Bankruptcy Court and DOR documents and recommend solutions for complex problems in all tax programs.
7. Prepare bankruptcy and probate claims. Investigate possible tax evasion and either collect or recommends further action within the framework of the Bankruptcy Code and DOR procedures.
8. Assist in training of other teammates; work in advisory capacity to agents with regard to the Bankruptcy Code and the connection to state tax compliance.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Associate's Degree in business, or two years of experience with tax return preparation, business ownership and operation, account research and analysis, or interpretation and application of policies, laws, rules or regulations or two years of customer service or comparable work experience.
Other: Valid driver's license or ability to provide independent transportation.
Knowledge of: Federal and State tax laws, Department rules, regulations, forms and tax returns; methods of tax collection; court and legal systems as ways to collect tax; business operations and practices; effective methods of communication; resources available for researching Federal and State tax laws, rules and regulations and their relation to the Bankruptcy and/or Probate Code; familiarity of Bankruptcy Court forms and schedules; accounting skills or bookkeeping training.
Skills in: Effectively using the telephone, drafting correspondence, relating effectively with people representing a wide variety of backgrounds; communicate orally and in writing; computer skills in Microsoft Programs including databases, spreadsheets and word processing, and other support programs.
Ability to: read court files; organize and verify tax data/information from computer generated reports and compile data files; present tax information at legal proceedings; interpret State tax programs; use independent judgment; interpret Federal, State and Bankruptcy Court rules as they apply to tax collection; set priorities.
