Description: Job Summary

The Lauder Lab at Harvard University studies aquatic locomotion in fishes and robotic models of swimming. We study biomechanics of movement and how fishes move in the aquatic environment. We work with live fishes and mechanical systems to better understand how to design the next generation of underwater vehicles, and measure body and fin movement patterns and swimming forces in robotic models.

Position Description

We are seeking a Laboratory Assistant to support our growing lab needs who is comfortable assisting with both live animal behavior studies in fish and also 3D computer modeling and robotic testing. This position will report directly to the Principal Investigator and a postdoc and perform the following duties:

  1. Assists in organizing, cleaning, and maintaining the laboratory equipment and spaces. Sets up and assists with experiments according to prescribed procedures.
  2. Works to maintain and set up laboratory computers.
  3. Records experimental data as directed.
  4. Maintains records of laboratory procedures.
  5. May assist in experiments with laboratory animals.
  6. May prepare chemical solutions or media.
  7. Develops and 3D prints models of fishes and prepares them for testing stability in a recirculating flow tank
  8. Assists in maintenance of laboratory fishes in our aquarium room, and must complete IACUC animal care training.


Basic Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent with some college courses.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

B.S. Degree in biology preferred, with a concentration in organismal biology. Experience and knowledge of the biology of fishes. Experience working with 3D software and modeling and 3D printing of fish models. Experience working with live fish. Experience with basic biological laboratory techniques. Understands and follows good laboratory practices including record keeping. Well-organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented, with excellent interpersonal skills.
