Hiring rate of position: Negotiable; commensurate with education and/or experience, if approved
Provides legal counsel to the Division of Public Health on related legal matters and issues.
This position has a direct impact on public safety, including, but not limited to, representation of the Department in discipline and emergency actions related to professional and individual health care licenses.
Assisting licensing boards with related legal matters.
Managing legal concerns related to surveillance and response to communicable diseases.
Act as a liaison with the private legal community on complex legal issues and legal issues that arise within the statutory ambiguity.
Requirements/ Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
In accordance with Section 7-101, Nebraska Revised, incumbents in this class must be admitted to the Nebraska Bar.
Attorney I
Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to the Nebraska bar.
Rate of pay $26.117-$36.666 per hour, commensurate with experience.
Attorney II
At least one year of experience as an attorney practicing law, providing legal services such as preparing cases, advising clients, and/or interpreting laws or administrative policies.
Rate of pay $30.186-$42.378 per hour, commensurate with experience.
Attorney III
At least three years of experience as an attorney practicing law and providing legal services such as preparing and trying cases, advising clients, and/or interpreting laws or administrative policies.
Rate of pay $36.950-$52.782 per hour, commensurate with experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience or familiarity with Public Health.
Other: We will consider candidates who will graduate with the minimum qualifications by December of 2024 that are taking the February, 2025 bar exam that will be sworn in during April, 2025. We will also consider candidates admitted to the bar in another jurisdiction eligible to be admitted to the Nebraska Bar by Motion contingent upon them becoming admitted to the Nebraska Bar.
Knowledge, skills abilities: Ability to: Provide legal support to the areas within public health; interpret and apply statutes, case law, decision of court/administrative hearings, federal and state regulations, and administrative rules and policies on a variety of legal issues; effectively communicate and interact with legal associated, other governmental employees, and the public; conduct legal research, knowledge of Westlaw; formulate legal opinions and recommendations based on legal research, identify critical elements of legal questions or issues; and use of a computer for word processing, research, meetings and communication, and case information/filing. Experience drafting and reviewing contracts, data-sharing agreements and/or procurements and funds. Knowledge of privacy laws, such as HIPAA, is a plus.
