Job context:

Under general supervision performs skilled work at the journeyman level in the inspection, installation, maintenance, adjustment, and replacement of HVAC systems (including dx-comfort cooling systems using refrigerants) according to manufacturers recommendations, department standards, and applicable State and Federal code and regulations. Must efficiently diagnose and resolve difficult heating and cooling problems, complete work order requests, inspect HVAC equipment and/or projects, and comply with proper disposal, recovery, recycling, and documentation of CFCs and HCHCs. Must follow all requirements and be in compliance with the Clean Air Act of 1991.

Responsibilities:

Examples of Work: Inspects and maintains equipment according to manufacturers recommendations and generally accepted department standards for all HVAC, Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) and Refrigeration systems. Operates and maintains recovery/recycle equipment and storage tanks per EPA guidelines. Reads, interprets, and works from sketches, blueprints, and schematics that relate to HVAC systems. Repairs and maintains all HVAC controls, whether pneumatic or electronic (e.g., air compressors and associated components, variable frequency drives, motorized actuators, smoke damper linkages, and so forth). Performs seasonal overhauls and troubleshoots transition of systems from heating to cooling and vice versa. Operates and maintains the Energy Management System as required; inspects rooms and/or buildings to ensure adequate environmental comfort. Maintains and repairs all components for both the condensate water and low-pressure steam distribution systems in each building. Carries out other limited trade tasks such as electrical repair and minor sheet metal duct work as required. Maintains RO/DI water treatment systems and associated components. Maintains processed air distribution systems; Performs housekeeping duties on all HVAC systems and in all mechanical rooms to maintain a clean, uncluttered, and safe work environment; Completes online permits as necessary, such as: hot work, confined space, lockout/tagout, and so forth; Uses computer, laptop, and/or other mobile devices to access e-mail, receive work instructions and other administrative information to include electronic payroll forms; Communicates daily using a two-way radio, and/or mobile device in order to respond to work-related routine and emergency information; Ensures shop owned equipment in proper working condition; Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Environmental Factors/Occupational Exposures:

  • The primary physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in both extreme heat and cold conditions, as well as conditions that are wet/humid, dry and during times when temperatures are below 32F for more than one-hour periods. Employee must lift, tug, pull, and transport, with or without assistance, both small and heavy equipment and material, as necessary.
  • The employee is required to bend, squat or crouch, crawl, kneel, stoop, stretch and stand and/or work in cramped areas for prolonged periods of times while repairing equipment both at floor level, overhead, and/or in confined space areas.
  • Environment may frequently include dust and/or airborne particles and occasionally loud noise, electricity/high voltage, chemicals, gases, fumes, and vibration. For this reason, employee is required to wear designated personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, ANSI-approved safety eyewear, hardhats, gloves, hearing protection, full face shield, aprons and footwear to prevent exposures to hazardous materials, noise, dust and/or airborne particles.
  • A respirator and/or specialized personal protective equipment may be required to access certain confined spaces.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess knowledge of HVAC installation, troubleshooting, repair and preventive and applied maintenance, mechanical equipment, utilities, distribution systems, controls and/or HVAC systems, including maintenance, troubleshooting and automatic temperature control devices including systems with refrigerants.
  • Must be able to repair and maintain commercial HVAC systems, including all types of ATC controls (pneumatic, electrical, and electronic).
  • Requires knowledge of the use of leak detectors, refrigerant charging methods, and procedures, and systems analysis, ability to work with all HVAC equipment under 20-tons capacity, use of refrigerant recovery systems and disposal of refrigerants.
  • Requires the skill and ability of pipe fitt

Qualifications:

Required Minimum Training and Experience:

  • Requires a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Minimum of four (4) years journeyman experience as a HVAC mechanic required.
  • A certificate of completion as a Type I and II technician as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, of the Federal Clean Air Act.
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of domestic, commercial and industrial HVAC systems and satisfactory completion of four-year certified State of Delaware HVAC apprenticeship program or equivalent.

Special Requirements:

  • With or without assistance, must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and job-related materials and/or equipment.
  • Requires the ability to accurately discern colors.
  • The employee is required to climb stairs, use 12-ft ladders and 32-ft. aerial lifts, work on rooftops, work from scaffolding and high areas using appropriate harness and tether equipment, and use ramps and aerial lift devices above ground in order to work above floor level and/or in pits.
  • This position is considered essential, meaning that personnel must report to work during times of emergencies and extreme weather conditions, safety permitting.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operators license in order to drive University of Delaware vehicles to get to and from job sites.
  • Non-allergic to solvents, gases, and chemicals commonly associated with refrigerant equipment; handling and storage of high- pressure gases.
