Job Summary:
The Certified Medical Assistant will provide support to the clinical providers by assisting with various patient care activities. This includes a combination of administrative and clinical practice responsibilities, such as: prepares patients for their visit in accordance with established procedures, obtain vital signs, prepare appropriate paperwork associated with visits, laboratory work, tests, or referrals for provider signature, assist providers and nurses in urgent and emergency clinical situations, as well as other tasks assigned by the Nurse Manager.
Qualifications:
Certification & Education:
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through a nationally recognized certifying body (e.g., AAMA, AMT).High school diploma or equivalent required.Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program preferred.Current CPR certification.
Experience:
Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a medical office or clinic setting, preferably in an FQHC or community health environment.Experience working with underserved populations is a plus.
Skills:
Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR/EMR) systems. (Centricity EMR software preferred).Proficiency with Microsoft office / 365.Familiarity with medical terminology, clinical procedures, and office software (e.g., Microsoft Office).Knowledge of medical billing, coding, and insurance verification processes.Preferred two years of medical office experience.Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on patient care and community engagement.Compassionate, patient-focused, and culturally sensitive.Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks efficiently and accurately.Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.Commitment to providing healthcare services at the top of your certification.Strong values focused on integrity, equity and honesty.Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred, but not required.
Responsibilities:
Greet and escort patients to exam rooms, ensuring comfort and confidentiality. Record and update patient medical histories, vital signs, and relevant data into the EMR system. Assist providers with patient exams, procedures, and treatments. Administer medications and vaccines as prescribed by the physician. Collect and process laboratory requests (including blood). Prepare specimens for external lab processing as needed. Sterilize medical instruments and equipment, and maintain an orderly, safe clinical environment. Provide instructions for post-appointment follow-up. Accurately document patient information in the EMR system, ensuring all medical records are current. Ensure an accurate accounting of patient medication list at every appointment. Assist with the preparation of patient charts and forms, ensuring all necessary documents are available for patient visits. Schedule patient appointments, follow-ups, and referrals as appropriate. Coordinate patient referrals to specialists or other services as needed. Assist with verifying patient insurance eligibility, updating insurance information. Help prepare and submit billing and coding information for insurance claims. Maintain a seamless patient experience by ensuring timely communication between patients, providers, and other healthcare staff. Ensure chart preparation for upcoming visits is consistent and accurate. Collaborate with other healthcare team members, including physicians, nurses, and social workers, to provide comprehensive care to our patients. Maintain a neat, clean, professional personal appearance and workspace Adhere to Harbor Care dress code (scrubs, appropriate footwear). Support Harbor Cares mission to provide accessible, patient-centered care to underserved populations. Attend interdisciplinary meetings as appropriate.
