JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists Charge Registered Nurse (RN), or registration representative with initial patient intake. Obtains data from patient initially and during visit regarding chief complaint, past medical history, allergies, vital signs, home medications, treatment prior to arrival, physical findings, etc. Documents findings in medical record. Reports abnormal findings to physician/provider and RN. Obtains specimens from patients and provides for proper care and delivery to appropriate area. Transports patients via wheelchair or cart for treatment, diagnostic procedures, and admission to units. Implements physician/provider orders in a timely manner and performs a variety of patient care treatments according to policy and procedure. Prepares patients for exam. Respects privacy of patient. Cleans wounds and prepares for suturing and application of final dressing. Takes telephone and/or verbal orders and documents same accurately. Performs special procedures as directed by RN/physician/provider to include: starting intravenous lines, performing venipunctures, assisting with CPR, and administration of oral and IV medications as per delegation policy. Informs Charge RN and physician/provider of any significant changes in patient's condition. Assists RN and physician/provider with patient care in critical care area of department to include: placement of patient on cardiac monitor, dysrhythmia interpretation, defibrillation and relaying of information to staff RN and/or physician/provider. Maintains work environment in orderly, clean fashion. Restocks supplies as needed. Cleans equipment as needed. Documents all care given in medical record according to department protocol/standards. Maintains an awareness of patient and personal safety and intervenes accordingly. Provides patient/family education concerning nature of illness, necessary treatments, follow-up home care, health maintenance and documents on medical record. Provides emotional support to patients/families and documents same. Keeps patients/ families informed during stay in department. Monitors charts for physician/provider orders and enters appropriate orders in computer or appropriate requisition, answers phone if unit secretary not available. Maintains confidentiality of patient-related issues. Supports the Patient Bill of Rights. Attends and participates in unit-related in-services, conferences, and meetings. Works with others to achieve unit and organizational goals. Utilizes proper chain of command for resolution of difficult issues. Participates in unit staff meetings and CQI plan to improve organizational performance and achieve unit and organizational goals. Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Must have current Paramedic certification as specified by Indiana Emergency Medical Services Commission. Must maintain current BLS or CPR for Healthcare Providers and ACLS certifications. Must have an appropriate number of in-service hours and appropriate records to maintain Paramedic status with the State of Indiana.
