Join our dynamic team as a Recreation Specialist (Operations) for Campus Recreation, where you'll have the exciting opportunity to oversee the day-to-day operations of a diverse array of fitness facilities. From the dedicated Student Fitness Center to the shared Vadalabene Center and multiple satellite fitness spaces, you'll play a vital role in creating a positive, engaging, and safe environment for all fitness enthusiasts on campus.
Key Responsibilities:
Facility Management & Operations: Oversee the operations of Campus Recreation's informal fitness spaces, including six basketball courts, a 25-yard pool, climbing areas, fitness rooms, weight rooms, racquetball courts, and more, across 150,000 square feet of dedicated and shared-use facilities. Ensure smooth day-to-day operation and a welcoming, high-quality experience for all members.
Fitness Operations & Equipment: Lead the development and maintenance of fitness facilities, ensuring a wide range of equipment to support strength training, cardio, and overall physical wellness. Stay ahead of trends in fitness to keep offerings fresh, engaging, and innovative.
Staff Leadership & Supervision: Help manage a team of student employees and graduate assistants in various roles. Hire, train, supervise, and guide your team to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all patrons. Provide leadership and enforce policies to maintain a positive, respectful atmosphere.
Risk Management & Safety: Play a crucial role in maintaining and enforcing risk management protocols to ensure safe operations for all fitness areas. Regularly assess and update safety practices, handling any issues or concerns as they arise.
Inventory & Compliance: Lead the equipment inventory process, ensuring all fitness equipment is up-to-date, properly maintained, and in compliance with SIUE Property Control guidelines. Work closely with Campus Recreation to ensure all facilities are fully stocked and operational.
Budget Management & Reporting: Assist with budgetary decisions for fitness facilities, from purchasing to tracking participation and expenses. Analyze data to inform equipment purchases, facility improvements, and program decisions. Prepare and review daily reports, participation statistics, weekly payrolls, and budget submissions.
Marketing & Engagement: Assist with the promotion and marketing efforts of informal fitness programs, engaging students and staff to encourage participation. Develop creative strategies to raise awareness of fitness opportunities within Campus Recreation, making sure they align with departmental goals.
Innovation & Growth: Continuously seek ways to improve and innovate the fitness experience for students and members. Gather feedback, explore new trends, and implement fresh ideas to keep fitness offerings engaging, safe, and effective.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree is required, and preferred to be in Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Recreation, Sports Management, Physical Education, or a closely related field.
CPR/AED certification is required or ability to obtain within the first 60 days of employment.
Prior experience in recreation/fitness operations management and corresponding staff supervision in these areas is required.
Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position. Illinois residency requires proof of a valid Illinois Driver’s License or state of Illinois ID Card. Failure to produce the required documentation within 180 calendar days will result in immediate termination of employment.
