Responsibilities:

The focus of the position is to evaluate, coordinate, and ensure the provision of academic accommodations to otherwise qualified Mercer students with disabilities are required by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act (ADAAA) and to provide technical assistance and policies in all non-employee matters of ADA compliance for all campuses.

Serves on committees within the student affairs. Collaborates with other university campuses. Responsible for assessing the effectiveness of services to students and accommodations. Oversees the access and accommodations review committee.

Manages the Accommodate database for housing, classroom, online, dining services, clinical settings, student teaching, and any other environment related to course curriculum accommodation requests.

The director will travel to the Atlanta campus for office hours as needed and supervise staff there. The director will also supervise professional and support staff who assist with providing accommodation services for students. The director will perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

A master's degree in disability studies, psychology, counseling, or related field is required along with two years of experience which must include: counseling or advising students; experience developing policies for disability compliance; experience/background working with persons with disabilities; and experience providing accommodations at a higher education institution.

Candidates must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the university's carrier.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of college student development is needed to provide accommodations to students.

  • Knowledge of the challenges faced by students with disabilities.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills are needed to clearly communicate with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.

  • The ability to keep updated, accurate, and confidential records.

  • Knowledge of computer software and assistive technology to organize and disseminate information and provide accommodations.

  • Knowledge and experience of disability and accommodations in post-secondary education.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the ADA and Section 504 and the changing legal requirements.
