Job Description:

Position Summary:

This role is responsible for providing legal counsel and support to the corporation and its related entities in all areas of employment law, labor relations, benefits and employee health and safety, to ensure protection of their interest and to ensure that their operations and activities are within the scope of applicable laws and regulations.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

• Job is an individual contributor.

• Job is an individual contributor and has no direct reports.

• Counsels and advises Human Resources client group regarding laws and regulations relating to employment, labor, benefits, health and safety. Counsels and advises the Risk Management group.

• Reviews and negotiates various types of employment policies and documents including company policies and SOPs, severance agreements, benefit policies, benefit plan documents, work rules, employment contracts, collective bargaining agreements, temporary labor contracts, and other policies and documents as required to ensure compliance and to protect the company's interests.

• Handles or participates in the handling of complex employee relations legal matters or projects, including employment and labor charges, government inquiries, mediation, negotiations, litigation, collective bargaining matters, other legal process, and internal audits.


  • Direct and oversee investigations alleging unlawful employment actions.

• As directed by the Managing Counsel or General Counsel, manages specific employment and labor related matters assigned to outside counsel.

  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of law department processes/protocols.
  • Provide research, advice, and other legal assistance to managing/general counsel.
  • Conduct training on preventive law issues as directed by managing/general counsel.

• This role has the responsibility to understand and place in practice appropriate safety procedures. This responsibility is achieved through education, training, use of protective equipment (as applicable) and by following safety policies, regulations, standards, and laws.

• Perform other duties as assigned by managing/general counsel.

Experience & Skills:

• 3-5 years of experience in related field is preferred.

  • Previous experience, corporate in-house or law firm.
  • 2 years of experience counseling on employment matters
  • Strong verbal written communication skills.

• Excellent proficiency in all Microsoft Office Suite Products.

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Education:

• BA/BS or equivalent is required.


  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school and licensed to practice in IL, with active bar membership in good standing.

Work Environment:

• Work is generally performed within a business professional office environment, with standard office equipment available.

• Work conditions are typical of an office environment.

• This role requires occasional domestic travel

• Position may require the physical agility of lifting up to 15 pounds.

• Position may require frequent and/or infrequent of bending, squatting, pushing, pulling, stretching/reaching, use hands or fingers, talk, hear, feel objects, tools, controls and standing/walking on concrete flooring.

• Position may require the physical ability to stand/walk for Less than 4 hours.
