Lynden Transport is looking for a Safety Specialist who assists the company Safety Department with ensuring that the Alaska service centers are in compliance with corporate health, safety, security and environmental policies. Provides operational and administrative support to the Director of HSE, and the HSE Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Provide operational and administrative support services as needed. Assist in special projects when directed and in the daily safety activities to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Provide assistance to the Director of HSE and HSE Manager in applying safety policies and procedures in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. Assists in the execution of company safety related activities.
Assists in the coordination of service center safety education and training, including new hire orientations, and helps ensure compliance with corporate safety programs and safety training for employees. Safety training may include proper handling and operation of hazardous materials, hazard communication, forklift operation, cargo securement, environmental management and other programs. Uses web based, video, and classroom training methods.
Assist in maintaining written safety procedures, records, and files, including training, testing, and safety records maintained by operations personnel. Assist in maintaining service center accident statistics and records, including on-job-injury incidents, vehicular accidents, cargo damage, and OSHA logs.
Assist in ensuring compliance with the company’s Fit for Work program, and in compliance with company hiring policy, including review of applicant’s records, conducting background investigations and pre-employment drug testing.
Assists with ensuring compliance with all Federal Motor Carrier Safety regulations, maintains the driver qualification files to a complete and accurate standard, and ensures compliance with DOT hours of service regulations by daily auditing of driver logs. Files and maintains the driver logs and other applicable records.
Works with the Director of HSE and the HSE Manager to help analyze work requirements and work conditions to propose and implement changes to increase safety, while still maintaining efficiency and effectiveness.
Assist in the monthly inspection of terminal facilities. Inspects the yard, terminal, and office to evaluate or detect existing or potential hazards, and recommend corrective or preventative measures where needed. Assist the Director of HSE and the HSE Manager in the compliance with Environmental BMP’s and Storm Water audits.
Records, traces, and enters information on company computer system as required. Makes inquiries from computer system. Operates various business machines. Maintains details of business transactions or other records as required. Answers telephones and gives information to callers.
Dependable and consistent attendance required.
Job will be performed at the Anchorage Service Center.

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or two to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedure manuals, or governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from company personnel, customers, and the general public.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to work with others.
Must be able to type (keyboard) 50 words per minute.
Position requires ability to write and use a keyboard for extended periods. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to conduct telephone communication. Must be able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods. Travel throughout the Alaska terminals will be required.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
