As assigned and scheduled by the Security Coordinator, Guards patrol University Housing resident hall facilities and grounds, and performs protective duties, such as enforcing pertinent administrative rules and regulations governing facility access, equipment security, and breaches in physical security controls.
Duties & Responsibilities
During hours scheduled by the Security Coordinator, Guards patrol (walking) specific housing facilities as assigned. Patrols are conducted to deter theft, damage to property or equipment, and to insure personal safety of students, employees and visitors.
Provide assistance and information to students, employees and visitors
Ensure enforcement of Campus and University Housing administrative rules and regulations governing facility access.
During patrol rounds, checks for the following and reports accordingly to instructions: • Unlocked facilities • Potential safety hazards • Signs of fire • Signs of vandalism • Inadequate lighting both inside and out • Equipment malfunctions such as alarms, fire exit doors, etc.
Requests police and/or medical assistance when needed.
Assist police officers as requested or assigned
Concludes patrol rounds by checking all doors, fences, gates, restrooms, stairwells, fire door, and windows
Assists staff, when necessary, in controlling access to facilities and enforcing the proper use and protection of materials and equipment
When requested, accompany/escort students, staff and visitors within University Housing property.
Maintain documentation of patrol findings and reports them to the Security Coordinator through nightly security log entries.
Prepare written reports as needed
Serve as back up to all Security Guards
Attends training, as assigned, on a regular basis.
During interim periods, work is assigned by the Security Coordinator.

Additional Physical Demands
Physical Requirements - The nature of the responsibilities of this position requires mobility, including patrolling inside and outside, building corridors, going up and down stairwells and escorting students, employees and visitors within University Housing property. In estimation, guards are expected to be mobile between 5-9 miles per shift. The incumbent is expected to be ever vigilant and to respond quickly to emergent situations at hand.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid/current Illinois driver's license. (Must provide at the time of applying)
No record of conviction of a felony, or of a crime involving moral turpitude.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to compile and update reports is required, as well as the ability to work independently and to cooperate with others. Previous guard duty/police training/fire training experience desirable.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4210 - Security Guard position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/1/2024. The negotiated starting hourly rate for this position is $17.12.
