Assistant Director of Unoccupied Aircraft Systems

Serve as the Assistant Director of Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS), responsible for leading the UAS program at the University of Vermont's Spatial Analysis Lab. Serve as senior engineer for UVM's core-membership in the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Center of Excellence for UAS Research ("ASSURE" - Alliance for System Safety of UAS through Research Excellence) program. Design and develop technical solutions using complex and highly specialized equipment that facilitates the integration of UAS into the National Airspace Systems (NAS). Support SAL Director on grant writing, business development, and actively seeking research and funding opportunities and the Financial Manager to facilitate UAS-based income-expense reports. Manage the prioritization, engineering, and implementation of specialized UAS data collection, processing, and analytical solutions for a broad range of research objectives. Manage the development of specialized UAS training materials and the administration of UAS educational activities. Provide technical expertise and guidance within UVM, to industry, and to governmental partners. Supervise UAS research staff, temporary technicians, and interns.
* Education and experience equivalent to:
o Master's degree in related engineering field and eight years related experience in aviation or unmanned systems engineering; research and development; or test or evaluation of unmanned aircraft or applicable systems.
OR
o Bachelor's degree in related engineering field and ten years of experience in aviation or unmanned systems engineering; research and development; or test or evaluation of unmanned aircraft or applicable systems.
* Experience in UAS/aviation risk assessment, mitigation, and management.
* Demonstrated experience in the operation of Group 1 (0-20lbs GTOW) and Group 2 (20-55 lbs. GTOW) and/or Group 3 (56-1,320 lbs. GTOW) UAS.
* Knowledge of UAS flight control software.
* Knowledge of applicable FAA regulations and guidance pertaining to the operation of UAS in the national airspace system.
* Knowledge of the UAS industry, including key manufacturers, suppliers, service providers, and integrators.
* Demonstrated proficiency in the use of a variety of geospatial software packages and knowledge of principles, practices, terminology, trends in UAS and geospatial technology.
* Proficiency directing UAS data capture, generation, and integration of data products in support of wide-ranging research objectives.
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office, computer networking and programs, and computer-based systems.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* FAA 14 CFR Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification with valid sUAS rating.
* Eight or more years of experience overseeing operations and maintenance of fixed-wing and multi-rotor UAS platforms.
* Ten or more years of experience with professional training and/or teaching concepts related to UAS operations and workflows.
* Experience in planning and executing government exercises (e.g. DoD, DHS, emergency management or law enforcement)
* Experience in managing and leading project teams.
* Driver's license (or ability to obtain).
$77,000 - $83,000
Open to current UVM employees only , A probationary period may be required, Occasional evening and/or weekends required (if non-exempt position, may result in overtime), Travel to and from worksites required, This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with an option to split time between campus and elsewhere, in accordance with the university telecommuting policy, Background Check required for this position
