Position Summary

Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.


As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry.


User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. MSU's nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.

As a Professor, you will be responsible for the following:



  • Provide leadership for rare isotope science development including graduate student and postdoc supervision [30%]

  • Perform research with rare isotopes to enhance the reputation and visibility of the facility [30%]

  • Develop methods to improve FRIB fragment separation, and reduce the time and effort necessary to deliver rare isotope beams [20%]

  • Operate fragment separators, beamlines, and experimental devices [15%]

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification. [5%]



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Demonstrated excellence in the application of experimental techniques in nuclear science, ion optics, and instrumentation with expertise in one of these areas

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research in rare isotope science and establish a world-recognized research program

  • Knowledge and operation of fragment separators or magnetic spectrometers

  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues, researchers, and other stakeholders within and outside the facility

  • Ability to do critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to address challenges in rare isotope science and fragment separation

  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly with all audiences, both verbally and in writing

Doctorate

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD with 10 + years of experience

  • Record accomplishments in rare isotope nuclear science and establishment of a world-recognized research program

  • Demonstration of knowledge of experimental techniques in nuclear science, ion optics, and instrumentation, with expertise in one of these areas
