POSITION SUMMARY

The Operating Room Equipment Technician assists the surgical team during operating procedures in cleaning, maintaining operating room equipment in collaboration with biomedical engineering. The Operating Room Equipment Technician also assists with moving and positioning the patient as directed by the surgical registered nurse and transporting patients and equipment. The Operating Room Equipment Technician performs direct and indirect patient care functions under the supervision of appropriately licensed personnel. The Operating Room Equipment Technician works under the direct supervision of the department manager or designee.

Duties and essential responsibilities include the following: reviews operating room schedule in advance to avoid equipment conflicts; sets up and checks equipment for cleanliness and functionality prior to use; tests equipment prior to return to location of origin, notify Biomedical engineering and operating room manager in a timely manner when repairs are needed; educate staff on equipment use; coordinate instrumentation and equipment reports with appropriate services or company representatives; work with management staff and service leads in ordering equipment and instruments; problem solves equipment issues in collaboration with manager and biomedical engineering; develop and maintain an ongoing operating room equipment inventory list; coordinate steam cleaning of all equipment and track compliance; provides input for both capital and operating expense preparation; manage work orders for equipment repairs and perform other related duties when necessary.

The Operating Room Equipment Technician assists customers in a friendly, prompt, caring manner, always maintaining the highest level of confidentiality and respect. This position works as part of the care team to meet the needs of the customer and to support team objectives, assisting other team members when necessary.

The Technician works as part of the care team to meet the needs of the customer and to support departmental objectives. The Technician provides quality customer service, participates in performance improvement efforts and assumes responsibility for professional growth and development.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: High School diploma or equivalent required.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: BLS certification required.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two years of experience with operating room instrumentation and equipment. Hospital experience preferred. Possess knowledge of medical terminology; interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and collaborate with other team members; ability to be flexible, set priorities, solve problems, good organizational skills, and use proper judgment in difficult situations. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Potential for exposure to the hazards of the hospital environment, such as exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous waste, and potential injury.

Position requires considerable standing, reaching and walking. Requires the ability to lift up to 60 lbs. Requires good hand/eye coordination and finger/hand dexterity, as well as good visual and hearing acuity and ability to maintain retraction for long periods of time.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position reports to the Clinical Manager of the Operating Room.
