Job Description
Our Rocklin, CA laboratory is looking for an Environmental Laboratory Manager to join their team! The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of their respective laboratory. The Laboratory Manager will be a subject matter expert and work with Departmental Supervisors to manage sample throughput to ensure turnaround times are met while maintaining data quality that meets or exceeds industry standards. This position is responsible for promoting a safe working culture and environment throughout the laboratory.
Job functions:
Profitably manages the day-to-day operation of the respective laboratory in line with budget targets and Group objectives focusing on analysis quality and sample throughput
Ensures effective laboratory operations, including housekeeping, human resources, safety, quality assurance, security, and environmental practices
Subject matter expert in the area of their analytical environmental chemistry
Works with client services to resolve technical and service issues
Works with service group supervisors to manage staff and instrumentation resources to maximize sample throughput and ensure that turnaround times are met
Implements best practices in the laboratory to maximize operational efficiency and maintains data quality that meets or exceeds industry standards
Demonstrates good leadership through effective planning, delegating and empowering subordinates appropriately, and leading by example. Manages people and performance daily, acting quickly and decisively when required
Ensures staffing levels are appropriate for sample volumes and that staff are properly trained to perform their assigned duties
Oversees hiring and training competent laboratory personnel
Responsible for buying appropriate services and equipment that are best suited to meet the needs of the laboratory
Ensures the lab's consumables inventory is appropriate for current workloads
Monitoring the quality of data and ensures that the lab's QA objectives are met on time
Performs regular in department visits throughout the laboratory
Works in conjunction with the functional support groups to ensure a proactive and planned approach to budgets, human resource planning, and the use of analytical instrumentation and information technology
Actively promotes a strong culture of safe laboratory practices and the maintenance of a safe working environment
Maintains a sound understanding of EHS management techniques and the commitment to deliver EHS performance that meets the expectations of SGS0Maintains a strong knowledge of and commitment to Group and Divisional EHS Targets and Objectives by setting, monitoring and formally reporting local Targets and Objectives
Balances production and cost control demands with EHS needs while not allowing one to become subordinate to the other
Ensures risk assessments are completed for all routine and non-routine activities
Ensures Safe Working Methods are in place and applied in all operations and as identified by contract
Identifies client and project EHS requirements and ensures these are built into the work while supporting the Group HSE Management System
Ensures that suppliers/contractors are apprised of relevant HSE requirements and that any adverse EHS impacts of their activities or products are managed and minimized
Identifies and provides relevant EHS training for their personnel
Participates in incident investigations involving their department personnel
Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Chemistry or a science-related field
Minimum of 5 years of progressive laboratory management experience
Advanced English language skills
Analytical Chemistry: Subject matter expert in inorganic/organic environmental chemistry.
Mathematical Skills: Some knowledge and understanding of financial statements and operating budgets.
Reasoning Skills/Abilities: Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills are a requirement of this position. Must have a solid understanding of process and workflow.
Dependable and reliable individual; whose daily presence adds to the success of the Organization.
Ability to follow instructions independently, with little or no supervision
Ability to design optimal solutions for problems and work with others in solving large complex problems.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals and/or groups both within the organization or while representing the organization.
Excellent time management skills which include the ability to balance multiple projects concurrently (with different deadlines) and arrange the resources necessary to accomplish them.
Knowledgeable about a wide range of environmental testing protocols, regulations, and certifications.
Computer Skills: The ability to use common software (i.e. Excel, Word, Outlook, LIMS)
Salary Range: $80-$110,000
