Position Description

The Primary Purpose of the Terminal Operator is to accept pipeline and railcar deliveries of liquid petroleum products, store products in tanks, and deliver product to customers at terminal truck loading racks, and perform all work in accordance with policy, procedure and safety requirements to ensure the safety of personnel and integrity of the environment and facilities. Duties may be performed at any of the Greensboro area locations.


  • Accept pipeline and railcar deliveries of liquid petroleum products and direct products to store in proper tanks. Requires the use of computer, crawling under railcars to manually connect and disconnect offloading hoses and equipment, using walkway system and safety ramps to gain access to the top of railcars to manually open and close vent valves, motor controlled equipment and/or the manual turning of valves on pipelines, manifolds, tanks and railcars, and operating offloading pumps.


  • Maintain inventory and other information by computer and when necessary by climbing and gauging tanks and sampling product.


  • Handling & testing liquid petroleum products.


  • Load or assist in the loading of trucks.


  • Perform or assist in the performance of preventive and regular maintenance duties.


  • Coordinate product delivery with customers and truck drivers.


  • Monitor TMS rack automation for loading rack, input customer data, and customer allocations in conjunction with scheduling department.


  • Effectively use lab equipment.


  • Respond to call-out to perform trouble shooting or maintenance on facility equipment.


  • Oversight of Risk Management Plan and Process Safety Management as it pertains to butane blending operations and communications with control center to maintain safe and consistent operations.


  • Perform duties of a first responder in spill or emergency situations.


  • Provide coverage for transmix operations and other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE/SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE

  • Prior work experience.

  • Basic office and/or administrative experience including handling phones, completing paperwork, typing, entering data, email, recordkeeping.

  • Personal computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must have and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

  • Satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company, and maintain insurability by company carrier.

  • TSA - Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) at terminals where required.

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Basic computer skills (send and receive email, create and maintain various records).

  • Manipulate motor controlled valves and perform other tasks involved in receiving products, directing to tanks, and making delivery to tank trucks.

  • Ability to pass and maintain all applicable testing; such as Cobra and Fit testing, training and certification requirements.

  • Ability to gain access underneath and on top of railcars to offload products.

  • Demonstrate ability to do basic math functions (add, subtract, multiply & divide).

  • Self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision or direction.

  • Highly responsible with high situational awareness and regard for safety.

  • Read and understand written material (in English).

  • Clearly communicate orally (face to face and by telephone) and in writing in English.

  • Ability to accept direction from supervisors and work cooperatively with people.

  • Ability to keep required work schedules, focus attention on details, adhere to operational procedures and follow work rules.

  • Must be flexible and able to work effectively in a team environment and consistently maintain a professional demeanor and behavior with peers, clients, customers and representatives of various local, state and federal agencies.

  • Must be able to understand and comply with all requirements for any emergency

  • Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools, and understand various maintenance and general operating principles and skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work schedule as necessary (days, afternoon / evening, graveyard shifts) including overtime and call-outs as necessary.

  • Work outside in all weather conditions.

  • Climb tank stairs, manually open and close valves, lift and connect chemical hoses and fittings underneath railcars, occasionally move or lift up to 100 lbs

  • Walk on paved, gravel or other surfaces.

  • Manipulate and use hand tools in performance of various tasks.

  • See / visual ability to perform various administrative and field operator tasks.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Above the minimum requirements; not required but advantageous in this position:

  • Technical school or Associate Degree

  • Experience in petroleum transportation, storage and distribution, knowledge of piping, valves and pressures, electrical and/or mechanical experience.

  • Experience with storage tank operations, including inspections, alarms and sampling.

  • Hazmat and railcar offloading experience a plus.

  • Hazwoper, USCG (Person in Charge).

  • Experience with maintenance and troubleshooting (mechanical, electric, electronic).
