The highly specific binding of antibodies makes them just as valuable to veterinary medicine as to human medicine, however the broad biophysical characteristics of animal antibodies are not well documented outside of model species like humans and mice. Quantifiable characteristics such as protein size, charge, hydrophobicity, and melting point can help predict whether an antibody will be manufacturable and safe for animal use. This internship will explore antibody charge by measuring the natural range of antibody isoelectric points for species of interest. The intern will harvest native antibodies from animal serum and identify the isoelectric point of those antibodies using capillary isoelectric focusing, while assisting with a wider range of chromatography and thermal assays on native and recombinant antibodies.
Antibody biophysics intern
Location: City, State
Kalamazoo, Michigan
Internship Summary:
The goal of this internship is the estimate the frequency of different isoelectric points in native antibodies for several animal species. The intern will learn antibody purification from serum and cell culture media and focus on measuring antibody isoelectric points using capillary isoelectric focusing. They will participate in ongoing biophysical chromatography and thermal analysis of antibodies as time allows.
Internship Job Duties:
Antibody purification
Capillary Electrophoresis
Analytical Chromatography (size-exclusion, ion exchange, hydrophobic interaction)
Thermal stability testing
Buffer preparation
Internship Qualifications:
Be and actively enrolled student in a bachelor's or master's program in biology, chemistry, or related field
Completion of at least 2 years of relevant course work (biology, chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, ect)
Experience with instrumental analysis (examples: chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, spectroscopy)
Ability to do stoichiometry independently
Ability to work individually and in a team
