Job Description
The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a non-tenure track, Lecturer position in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, with a focus on Lusophone Cultures and Literature.
We seek candidates whose academic interests complement the current strengths of our faculty in Spanish & Portuguese and will directly contribute to our undergraduate program in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies. Potential candidates should have experience in areas related to cultural studies, literature, or cinema in at least one of the three geographical areas: Portugal, Brazil or Lusophone Africa. The candidate should demonstrate the ability and interest to work on the development and promotion of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies within and outside UMass, helping establish partnerships with peer institutions in Portugal, Brazil, and/or Lusophone Africa, including Cape Verde, Angola, or Mozambique.
Duties include advising undergraduate students, teaching courses, supervising TAs, and performing service duties as required by the department and the university.
This is an initial two-year appointment which may be renewed. The start date for this position is expected to be September 1, 2025.
Requirements
A Ph.D. in Lusophone Studies or a related field is required by the time of appointment. Native or near-native fluency in English and Portuguese is required. Candidates who can speak Spanish or Cape Verdean Creole or can teach Spanish and culture classes are encouraged to apply.
