The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Office of Graduate Studies are seeking participants for the SURF Program from May 20,
2024 - July 26, 2024.
The SURF Program offers participants the opportunity to choose from 17 areas of research in the Biomedical Sciences, including Bacterial Pathogenesis, Cancer Biology, Gene Expression/Molecular genetics, Immunology, Neuroscience, and Stem Cell/Regenerative Medicine.
Job Description
The SCCC Research Assistant Intern provides support in the performance of research related tasks for the assigned department(s) including
data compilation, manipulation, and presentation. Additionally, the Research Assistant Intern leverages knowledge to perform complex duties
involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological, and other research laboratory tests, experiments, and determinations.
Individuals will be introduced to the type of projects encountered during graduate research training and lead to an understanding of the
planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in the pursuit of basic answers to current questions in the biological sciences. In addition to laboratory experience, SURF students will participate in professional development activities including weekly workshops and seminars.
They will spend ten weeks pursing individual research projects in the laboratories of UMMSM faculty members. Participants will gain experience in modern research techniques, and have an opportunity to plan and execute an experimental strategy to answer a scientific questions. Students will be supervised at all times by faculty or their designee while in the lab and by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) or Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) staff during workshops and seminars.

7. Participates in the preparation of research papers and abstracts.
8. Coordinates database management.
9. Performs special projects and assignments in a timely fashion.
10. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required
Certification and Licensing: Not Applicable
