Research in the Bourret laboratory primarily investigates the molecular mechanisms of signal transduction by two-component regulatory systems in bacteria. The employee will conduct an independent research project. The employee will also help develop assays for the ADP-ribose hydrolase activity of alphavirus nsP3 macrodomains. Methods for both topics will mostly involve protein purification and measurement of enzyme kinetics. With suitable training and close supervision, the employee might perform experiments using 32P radioisotope. Participation in weekly group meetings to describe results, as well as discuss results of other lab members, is expected.
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Must be able to work and communicate well with other lab members. Must be able to keep accurate notes of experiments performed. Must have good time management skills. Must be able to work with minimal supervision following appropriate training. Must have the flexibility to occasionally work briefly on nights or weekends to keep experiments progressing in a timely manner. Must be able to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
Laboratory research experience outside of coursework is strongly preferred. Laboratory research experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, and/or microbiology is not essential but would be viewed favorably. Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to biology or chemistry is strongly preferred. Chemistry coursework through organic chemistry is preferred. Mathematics coursework through calculus is preferred. Familiarity with bioinformatics methods and software for analysis of protein sequences and structures would be an asset. Familiarity with GraphPad Prism statistical analysis software would be an asset.
