Job Description:

St. Norbert College (SNC), a nationally-ranked, private, Catholic, liberal arts college is seeking a Chef. The Chef is responsible for producing food for the student meal plan and catering, and assisting the other food service units on campus in the production of various items. The regular work hours fluctuate between 7:00 am to 3:00 pm and 12:30 pm to 8:30 pm with some deviation during summer and academic breaks. Chefs work every 3rd weekend on a rotation with other chefs. They are also on call every 9th weekend on a rotation with the other chefs.



Specific responsibilities:



  • Prepare food according to standardized recipes following the amounts set forth on the cafeteria production sheets, catering service orders, child care menus, and other menus that may be created.




  • Control portion sizes through the proper measuring and weighing of ingredients.




  • Store and rotate food inventory according to state and federal guidelines regarding safe food handling practices.




  • Record and maintain daily food usage records using cafeteria production sheets, catering service orders, child care menus, and other menus that may be created.




  • Delegate food preparation, cooking duties, and general cleaning duties of dishes and kitchen equipment to Prep Cooks, Kitchen Assistants, and Pool/Student Employees.





Required Minimum Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or equivalent.




  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Culinary Arts is preferred.




  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.




  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse campus environment or commitment to do so as an employee of St. Norbert College.




  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.




  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers and customers, particularly in conflict situations.




  • Ability to talk politely and resolve customer service issues.




  • Ability to multitask, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments.




  • Ability to follow recipes.




  • Skilled in basic math computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.




  • Ability to exercise good judgement and decisions in an expeditious manner.




  • Skilled at setting a good example for others.




  • Ability to concentrate and focus in a noisy environment.




  • Ability to pass a post offer functional capacity test.



The College may consider any equivalent amount of credentials, licensures, training, or experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.




Equipment Used:



Steam Kettles, grills, char-broilers, woks, slicers, steamers, convection ovens, combi-ovens, pizza ovens, mixers, deep fryers, dishwasher, and other general kitchen utensils and equipment.

  • Generally a position standing/walking a majority of the day in a kitchen environment. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 25 lbs. frequently with occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
