The Weingarten lab in the Microbiology Department of Harvard Medical School is looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic research assistant II (RAII) to work in a virology research laboratory. The ability to communicate effectively, work well in a team setting, and a strong desire to learn new methods are required.
Position Description
The RA II will design experiments (with the PI or with a senior scientist), perform the experiments, and conclude the results for reports. They will perform a variety of molecular biology techniques including molecular cloning, DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, PCR, and next generation sequencing. In addition, they will learn and perform tissue culture work and help to maintain, store and document lab cell lines. The candidate should have high organization skills and meticulous documentation of experiments in a lab notebook. The RA will additionally assist with lab maintenance and participate in routine lab work including preparing shared reagents, ordering lab supplies, waste disposal, and maintenance of records for laboratory certifications. They will be expected to contribute to lab goals by undertaking other lab duties as required. Basic Qualifications
College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in a related discipline.
At least 1 to 2+ years related work experience (relevant course work may count towards experience).
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Demonstrated abilities in basic laboratory techniques.
Exposure to applicable computer technologies, including specific software applications, may be required.
Appropriate communications skills required.
Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory protocols and abilities in laboratory techniques required.
Minimal computational skills (Excel, Photoshop, PowerPoint) are essential.
Also essential are good communication skills, both oral and written.

This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
