Operating Room Assistant - Per Diem Rotating - BWH OR Clinical Support




GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:



Operating Room Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of PCA. The ORA is responsible for transporting patients, cleaning O.R.s, maintaining a clean environment, moving equipment, delivery of specimens, second scrubbing PRN, and other duties as assigned. The ORA functions as a member of the Perioperative Nursing Team who has specific knowledge, skills and training to work in an Operating Room Environment.



PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:



  • Promotes a philosophy of patient/family focused care through cordial greeting and interactions with patient, families and hospital personnel

  • Provides hospital/unit orientation information for guest, patients and families

  • Demonstrates an awareness of hospital systems and procedures, location of all departments, procedure areas and other patient services. Refers patients, families and others to appropriate resources

  • Independently transports and assists in the transfer of patients of all age group, adolescence through geriatric

  • Properly identifies patients utilizing 2 approved identifiers

  • Ensures safety and support measures in patient transfer ( i.e. bedrails raised, patient covered with blanket and warm)

  • Is aware of special precautions in transferring patients with precautions

  • Is aware of proper body mechanics when assisting in patient transfer and lifting of heavy objects

  • Clean Rooms (operating rooms, induction rooms, set-up areas, autoclave areas, scrub sink areas)

  • Remove suction containers and equipment, laundry bags, trash bags

  • Wash furniture and make up O.R. beds

  • Clean off blood from surfaces (i.e. walls, equipment, etc.)

  • Clean floors

  • Exchanges full biohazardous needle / medication waste / chemotherapy / sealed sources of radiation and radioisotopes.)

  • Anticipates and is attentive to progress of O.R. schedule, has supplies ready for immediate use in order to meet tight deadlines of following cases

  • Keep the corridors clean and free of trash and debris

  • Assist in retrieval, moving, set-up and return of specialized equipment and instrumentation, (i.e., fracture table preparation, ICU beds, foot pedals, intact electrical cords; anesthesia carts etc.)

  • Delivery of specimens to labs (i.e. microbiology, cytology, pathology, etc.)

  • Collect and log specimens from refrigerators

  • Retrieving, delivery and return of blood products

  • Utilizes patient identifiers when retrieving blood products

  • Ensures proper hand off of products to OR staff

  • Creates stock lists, obtain and stock O.R. scrub sink, set-up rooms, work stations and autoclave areas (i.e. face masks, soap, paper work, etc.)

  • Distribute linen

  • Carry out duties that are "service specific" (i.e. PACU, Amigo, Interventional Radiology etc.)

  • Reporting broken stretchers, beds equipment etc.

  • Filling out equipment repair sheet and taking broken stretchers out of circulation.

  • Carry out standard duties which are within scope (i.e. hold limbs, assist in positioning patients)

  • The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients (all age groups) served in the Perioperative area and Operating Rooms

  • Performs pre-operative surgical preps (i.e. wash site and hair clipping)

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:



  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Able to read, understand and write English

  • Successful completion of Hospital Orientation

  • Successful completion of Departmental Orientation and Training


SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:



  • Must be able to lift 40lbs. Independently

  • Must be able to push stretcher independently with patient weighing up to 250lbs

  • Must be able to comprehend written directions for mixing cleaning supplies and ordering supplies

  • Must be aware of proper body mechanics when assisting in patient transfer and lifting of heavy objects

  • Must possess interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with other health care members

  • Must constantly be alert and attentive to progress of O.R. schedule to meet tight deadlines of following cases


WORKING CONDITIONS:



Work is performed in a sterile and substerile environment requiring wearing surgical scrub attire which includes, but is not limited to scrubs, hat, mask, gloves, booties, gown and goggles. There may be times when the temperature is required to be very warm (< 80 degrees) for hours at a time. Work is underground with no windows or exposure to light. There are areas with some physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors and high noise level. Handling of body fluids; sharps and tissue occurs frequently. Therefore strict adherence to precautions is mandatory and carelessness could result in exposure and/or injury. The environment is fast-paced, high stressed, demanding and intense atmosphere.
