The Orthopedic Research Department in Naples, FL is responsible for supporting all benchtop and clinical research testing endeavors across all product portfolios. Specifically, the Biomaterials Team is responsible for mechanical and polymeric product testing that supports product development, manufacturing process changes, regulatory submissions, product design changes and helps drive business decisions. The individual will be detail oriented in the execution and documentation of approved test methods and will be expected to communicate issues in a timely and accurate manner.
Main Objective:
To perform research, materials testing in a laboratory setting, report findings, and provide material science based guidance and support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Design and perform research studies to facilitate the characterization of new and existing biomaterials. Such research could include:
Thermal & Compositional testing
Hardness Testing
Material Characterization
Evaluation of biomaterials and biologics
Evaluation of material properties as a function of time and/or sterilization
Design and perform research to facilitate evaluation of new materials.
Design and implement post market research to support existing materials.
Coordinate out-sourced testing with vendors.
Provide guidance and materials science related assistance to engineers, study stakeholders and other research personnel using appropriate scientific and medical terminology.
Research and prepare material science-based rationales and presentations.
Provide materials science related expertise for the support of business decision.
Prepare technical reports, maintain and create various engineering test environments, and disseminate information to facilitate business decision making.
Oversee maintenance of all materials characterization equipment within the Orthopedic Research lab.
Assist in the development and implementation of research procedures and methods.
Perform biomaterials studies by preparing test samples, data collection, record keeping, and statistical analysis.
Operate a variety of materials testing machines, gauges and software to obtain requested testing results.
Maintain laboratory organization and cleanliness.
Perform peer-reviewed literature searches.
Must comply with all laboratory safety instructions and wear PPE as appropriate for various activities.
Attending relevant training workshops and conferences pertaining to materials in medical applications.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in related science field required
3 years' experience in Orthopedics or a related field or MS degree in related science field with 2 years' experience in Orthopedics or a related field required.
PhD preferred
Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:
Knowledge of metal and polymer properties required.
Knowledge and experience in use of mechanical, polymeric, and/or material characterization test equipment and testing methods required.
Ability to write accurate test procedures/summaries/reports upon completion of requested tests required.
Knowledge and experience in the use of statistical methods required.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills required.
Ability to identify abnormal test results and identify the source preferred.
Accurate record keeping and Good Documentation Practices required.
Knowledge of study design required.
Knowledge of manufacturing processes required.
Knowledge of ASTM standards for medical devices preferred.
Knowledge of different sterilization methodology for medical devices preferred.
Knowledgeable and experienced in non metallics, ceramics and polymers preferred.
Knowledgeable and experienced in both ferrous, non-ferrous metallurgy, and materials joining preferred.
Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills:
Instruments used will include Materials Testing Systems, Molecular Weight equipment, Differential Scanning calorimeters, FTIR, Hardness testing, SEM, EDS, custom made testing apparatuses, and data acquisition systems.
