The Smart Energy Design Assistance Center (SEDAC) is currently searching for an Energy Code Trainer to work with SEDAC's Energy Codes Training program to develop and present energy codes training both in person and online. This position is based in Champaign, Illinois, with potential options for hybrid remote or remote work.


SEDAC is sponsored and funded by federal and state agencies including the Illinois State Energy Office at the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Opportunity, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources; the US Environmental Protection Agency; the US Department of Energy; local government agencies; and other funding sources.


SEDAC is an applied research center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a mission to decrease the energy footprint of the State of Illinois. SEDAC works to achieve its mission through a wide range of programs in energy efficiency, renewable energy development, greenhouse gas reduction, and clean energy workforce development.



Duties & Responsibilities



Teaching & Research
• Develop engaging training content and presentations for webinars, in-person workshops, and asynchronous learning platforms for student and professional audiences.
• Conduct and participate in technical training sessions that are delivered both remotely and in-person at locations throughout the state of Illinois.
• Research and develop written informational resources on topics related to energy codes.
• Research and present on technical advancements in Illinois Energy Code amendments.


Outreach
• Represent SEDAC at regional and national energy codes or related conferences
• Develop relationships with industry and trades stakeholders in Illinois to improve adoption of the Illinois Energy Conservation Codes.
• Provide representation for hearings at State level code adoption meetings
• Provide presentations on energy code topics to industry, trades groups, code officials and other stakeholders.
• Meet with local community groups, architects, developers, engineers, and contractors to inform them about building code procedures and requirements


Compliance
• Provide expertise on Illinois Energy Conservation Codes to ensure compliance with the applicable federal and state laws, ordinances, and codes.
• Interpret provisions of the Illinois Energy Conservation Code, Illinois Stretch Code, and alternative compliance options such as ASHRAE 90.1.
• Provide technical assistance to code officials, architects, and other stakeholders regarding the energy code which may include reviewing compliance reports, plans and supporting documentation to ensure compliance.
• Respond to building code technical questions from building officials, staff, contractors, designers, and members of the general public, in consultation with other staff on the SEDAC energy code team.


Operations
• Support continuous efforts to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality customer service.
• Track and report specific program activities.
• Other relevant duties as assigned to further the mission of SEDAC.



Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, construction, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering presentations in a variety of settings including remote and in-person.

  • Demonstrated experience analyzing complex requirements and providing written and verbal reports or recommendations.

  • In-state (IL) travel is required for this position and the ability to travel in-person via reliable transportation to business sites must be maintained for the duration of employment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience as a trainer, corporate training specialist, or related position.

  • Three years of professional experience in construction or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience working with Illinois Building Codes and interpreting Building Codes, Standards, and Procedures.

  • Professional Certification such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Professional Engineer (PE), Licensed Architect, BPI Building Analyst, or related credential.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to research and analyze information and data to make appropriate conclusions and recommendations.

  • Excellent organizational skills, such as time management, task prioritization, follow-through, and ability to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to read and analyze building plans and specifications.

  • Ability and willingness to travel in-state for business site visits.

  • Ability to work in teams.

  • Good interpersonal skills and communication with all levels of management and stakeholders.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Ability to use software such as Microsoft Office Suite and web-based information management tools.


Appointment Information


This is a 100% full-time Academic Hourly position, appointed through June 30, 2025, with the possibility of reappointment based on performance and funding. This position offers paid leave (1 hour of paid leave earned per 40 hours of work, up to 40 hours of paid leave per year). This could become a permanent position at a later date, depending on department needs and funding. The expected start date is as soon as possible. The budgeted range of hourly rates for this position is $35 per hour - $45 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
