WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Preserve Management Assistant (PMA) will work throughout the driftless region of southeast Minnesota including Wabasha, Winona, Houston, Fillmore and Olmsted counties. They will serve on a 2-4-person stewardship crew participating in stewardship activities on both public and private lands, including TNC preserves and state-owned Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Tasks include prescribed burn preparation, fire implementation and post fire monitoring, removal and chemical treatment of exotic species, tool and equipment maintenance, and monitoring and data collection. Other activities may include wildlife surveys, native seed harvest, tree and shrub planting, and preserve maintenance duties like boundary posting. The PMA may also assist with leading volunteers, seasonal staff, interns, and Conservation Corps MN & IA crew members. The PMA may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

The position will be based out of Kellogg, MN at $16.00 to $19.00 per hour depending on experience. There are 2 position openings: one from 12/2024 - 3/2025, the other from 12/2024 - 12/2025. The yearlong position will have full benefits. Housing is provided in Winona, MN.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • High school diploma or GED and 1 year's training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).
  • Must be qualified, or able to become qualified, as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2.   • Must achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Fire Program Manager and the TNC Fire Manual. (US Forest Service work capacity test at arduous level (3 mile walk with 45 lb pack in 45 minutes)).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 1 - 2 years' experience in land management or related field.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
  • Ability to obtain driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
  • PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $16.00 to $19.00 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
