Function of Position:

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Public Safety, an Assistant Chief is responsible for managing available resources to ensure the Department of Public Safety operates efficiently and effectively. An Assistant Chief is responsible for the Operations Section or Administration Section within the Department of Public Safety and the subdivisions and functions within each area. The Operations Section includes, but is not limited to Patrol, Investigations, Parking Services, and Special Events. The Administration Section includes but is not limited to Support Services, Strategic Planning, Technology, Clery Compliance, Records Management, Community Policing, Training, and Accreditation.


It's important to note that the Chief of Public Safety has the authority to reassign subdivisions between Assistant Chiefs as they deem necessary. This dynamic aspect of the role requires a high level of adaptability and flexibility.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides overall leadership and direction for each functional unit within his/her assigned area of responsibility;
  • Provides direct and indirect supervision over personnel within each functional unit of his/her assigned area of responsibility;
  • Completes evaluations and monitors quality of employee performance for direct reports under his/her command;
  • Responsible for monitoring discipline within the subdivisions under his/her command by acting on investigations generated by citizens, other employees of the Department, members of other departments, or directly from the Chief of Public Safety;
  • Completes internal and/or confidential investigations as directed;
  • Provides leadership during crisis situations;
  • Provides direction and assistance in the recruitment, selection and appointment of prospective Department employees as assigned;
  • Provides overall direction and coordination of the Department's staff development and training program as assigned;
  • Provides overall administration and quality control of the Department's internal operating systems that pertain to his/her assigned area of responsibility;
  • Assists with the preparation, development and monitoring of the Department of Public Safety's operating budget;
  • Represents the Department of Public Safety on College committees as directed by the Chief.
  • Serves as a liaison for the Department of Public Safety with external law enforcement agencies and other emergency service providers as assigned or directed by the Chief;
  • Serves as the Department of Public Safety's on-call official as assigned by the Chief;
  • Serves as Acting Chief, as assigned, in the absence of the Chief;
  • Responsible for adhering to the College Code of Conduct;
  • Responsible for contributing to and maintaining an inclusive and collaborative College environment;
  • Responsible for maintaining technological competencies utilized by the College;
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Chief.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a regionally-accredited higher education institution
  • Minimum ten (10) years of supervisory experience, in a sworn capacity, at a college campus
  • Demonstrated understanding of college and/or law enforcement accreditation programs
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and writing of agency policies
  • Experience with coordinating investigations and the use of investigative case management systems
  • Graduated with a New York State police office or campus peace officer certification
  • Possession of a current and valid NYS driver license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or higher from a regionally-accredited institution
  • Certified as a general topics police instructor
  • Experience with public speaking
  • Demonstrated experience with Title IX investigations
  • Experience working in law enforcement capacity on a college campus; preferably a community college
  • Experience with NYS Fire code procedures for academic and residential student housing
  • Experience with ACADIS and NYS Department of Criminal Justice services
  • Experience with Report Exec report writing platform
  • Experience with the Genetec camera and access control platform
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently


Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $61,845 to $104,847 and is based on these mentioned factors.
