The Role



Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is currently hiring Welder Trainees.


Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association, local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities, to offer Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs for individuals interested in learning a trade and working full-time for NNS. The Welder Trainee program is offered at Camp Community College (Suffolk, VA), Virginia Peninsula Community College (Hampton, VA), and Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth, VA). This is a 3-week (UNPAID) program (120 hours), 7:00am - 3:30pm (Monday thru Friday). You must successfully pass this 3 week program to receive a start date with NNS.


As a welder, you will first be qualified through the shipyards state of the art welding school. After completion of welding school, you will use a wide range of welding filler metals and welding processes to perform structural and/or pipe welds in all phases of ship construction. Welders perform tack, fillet, and full penetration welding on steel foundations and structural and pipe joints in production on aircraft carriers and submarines. This will be done using various welding processes including SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding). All work will meet stringent nondestructive testing requirements, including visual, ultrasonic, and radiographic inspections. Additionally, welders will receive further training in certified visual inspection, fire watch protocols, carbon arcing, and how to troubleshoot minor welding equipment issues.

Must Have



Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and drug screen
