Veterinary Nurse/Veterinary Technician, Rotating, Large Animal Clinical Sciences 

College of Veterinary Medicine



5 Positions Available


The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of rotating Veterinary Nurse/Veterinary Technician, located within the Large Animal Clinical Sciences Department. The primary purpose of this position is to provide nursing care in a variety of service areas by making patient assessments, preparing patients for exams or treatments, and assisting faculty and staff to achieve clinic goals. The rotating veterinary nurse position serves to ensure coverage of hospital services during the weekends and part of the weekday. Position helps with performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results and records patients' medical histories and symptoms, including observations.  Position administers medicine and treatments, establishes plan of care, and operates medical equipment.  Incumbent serves as a resource of information and guidance. Position supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents. This position may be asked to provide compensated emergency technical support when needed. Depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate, individual will be hired in as a Veterinary Nurse 1, Veterinary Nurse 2, Senior Veterinary Nurse 1, or Senior Veterinary Nurse 2.





Qualifications


Typical Responsibilities:



  • Provides patient care in a variety of services (medicine, surgery, anesthesia, rehabilitation, emergency and critical care, field services, farrier, and reproduction) by assessing large animal patients, performing triage, and preparing patients for exams or treatments. Performs diagnostic tests and submits blood work and lab specimens.  Records patients' medical histories, symptoms, and observations.  Administers medications and treatment.  Prepares for surgical procedures, using aseptic and sterile techniques. Helps to establish a plan of care and confers with owner.  Regularly communicates with supervising Clinician. Operates and cleans medical and/or surgical equipment such as laparoscopic and arthroscopic machines, endoscopes, ultrasound machines, etc. Operates and maintains heavy equipment such as stocks, chutes, etc. Collaborates with others to ensure quality patient care is received.  Enters charges on patient accounts. Manages supplies, equipment, and inventory.  Organizes products, maintains equipment, and orders supplies. 

  • Supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents. Supports research efforts by teaching in laboratories and non-clinical settings when time allows.



Minimum Qualifications:



  • Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)- accredited program in Veterinary Technology with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree

  • Must obtain a license to practice in Tennessee within first year of employment

  • Future graduates will be considered as long as degree is obtained prior to start



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Additional relevant experience preferred.
