TITLE: Assistant Professor of Physical Education DEPARTMENT: College of Arts and Sciences REPORTS TO: Chair, School of Education CLASSIFICATION: Faculty-9 months (Tenure Track) EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD STANDARD WORK HOURS: 40 hours per week EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Professor of Physical Education Health in the School of Education, Human Development, and Consumer Sciences is a 9-month tenure- track position at Kentucky State University. The successful candidate will have a degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in Physical Education with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in physical education, or similar field. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses, serve as an academic advisor, participate in curriculum development, serve on institutional committees, as well as area or field instructional, mentor students in research projects, and service-related duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses, including physical education, or similar areas.
Provide effective individual, small group or whole class instruction, using a variety of techniques, as appropriate for assignment and instructional mode;
Develop appropriate course materials, such as assignments, activities, and assessments to meet course objectives and program standards
Prepare syllabus and paperwork in accordance with department standards and campus requirements;
Evaluate student work, assigning grades, and maintaining grading records
Develop an online learning platform via Blackboard that meets university standards for each course to meet the needs of our students
Must maintain current instructional certifications as well as current CPR/First Aid certification required.
Assist on advising and mentoring of students.
Participate in curriculum development and review.
Serve on committees for university, stakeholder groups, and professional associations.
Mentor graduate and undergraduate students engaged in applied research projects.
Although this is primarily a teaching position, the candidate is expecting to develop research proposals, conduct some research, analyze research results, and publish results in area of Physical Education.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Experience teaching students in a college or university setting.
Experience teaching students in a K-12 setting.
Excellent computer skills, including experience teaching online.
Ability to work effectively with students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Experience with multiple approaches to teaching and learning, such as incorporating a variety of technologies into the classroom, teaching online or hybrid classes, or using other innovative techniques.
Demonstrated ability to adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including a wide range of student preparedness, backgrounds, and life experiences.
Ability to work effectively with supervisors, colleagues, staff and students as part of an educational team.
A strong commitment to diversity is essential.
Proven prior university teaching experience implementing cutting-edge instructional technologies to promote student problem solving skills within campus laboratory and Canvas distance learning environments.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in the university setting.
Ability to work under deadlines.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:This position does not have supervisory responsibility.
OTHER DUTIES: Position will perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A doctoral (EdD or Ph.D.) degree Preferred but will consider a Master’s in physical education, or similar field.
The successful candidate must have a graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education, with a strong background in physical education, health, or recreation, with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in these areas.
Current in appropriate certifications NSAM, ACSM, ACE, IDEA, ISSA, NSCA (CSCS ), BLS or Healthcare CPR certification, CPR/AED certification, and/or equivalent in field of instruction.
Emergency Response courses required certification as instructor to teach CPR; American Heart Association BLS certification preferred.
Demonstrated successful teaching experience in physical education and health programs needed. Experience in weight room settings, fitness training, personal training and/or coaching students around topics such as body conditioning, weight lifting, body building, wellness and nutrition also preferred.
Licensing and Certifications:
Current in appropriate certifications NSAM, ACSM, ACE, IDEA, ISSA, NSCA (CSCS ), BLS or Healthcare CPR certification, CPR/AED certification, and/or equivalent in field of instruction.
Emergency Response courses required certification as instructor to teach CPR; American Heart Association BLS certification preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
