Department:Island OperationsPay Rate Type:SalaryEmployee Type:Job Summary:Colby College is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of boat captain and island maintenance generalist. Colby's Island Campus is located on Allen and Benner Island which are a private island five miles south of Port Clyde in the Gulf of Maine. Reporting to the island campus manager, this position will require the individual to reside on Allen Island for 5 days per week for 7 months per year (April through October). This individual is required to be on-call while on the island after regular business hours. A private, single family and fully furnished house will be provided on the island. While not required, should the individual desire to reside full time, 12 months per year on the island, arrangements can be made.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serve as a boat captain with the ability to operate a 36' vessel while safely navigating the boat between the islands within the following conditions: Day or night, with or without heavy boat traffic in varied weather conditions and during times of reduced visibility due to fog, rain or snow.
Controlled and safe docking of vessel in a variety of wind and weather conditions
Supervise safe vessel operation to include safety talks with vessel guests; maintain a log of guests and handle any other required paperwork; ensure that all PFDs and other life safety gear is in good condition and stowed properly
Perform a pre-check on all vessel systems prior to getting underway
Perform daily and other scheduled maintenance on the island vessels as directed by the island manager. This includes keeping records of all maintenance
Perform annual inspection and any required maintenance of all survival suits
Conduct a monthly test of the vessels ERRIB and record results in the vessels log
Inspect and maintain all dock lines
Ensure the vessel is always clean and presentable to guests
Assist other island staff and or summer fellows with loading and unloading guest gear
Ensure floats, ramps, bridles, etc. are all clean and working properly
Maintain communication with the island manager to be aware of vessel's daily schedule
Assemble mooring pendants as required
Communicated to uninvited visitors the island's "no trespassing" policy in a professional manner
Assist in the performance of all island maintenance generalist tasks to include, but not limited to building and grounds maintenance; trail maintenance; island utilities maintenance; vehicle maintenance (trucks, carts, equipment), building life safety inspections; workshop and tool maintenance; winterization process for floats, docks, etc.; and basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tasks
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school graduate,
Possess or be able to obtain a USCG OUPV/Six Pack license
Mechanically inclined with a strong knowledge of boat operation and safety, the ability to work collaboratively with the Island team, the ability to communicate professionally and courteously with Island guests
