Be a Tar Heel!:

The Environment, Energy and Ecology Program (E3P) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to fill a teaching assistant professor (non-tenure track) position. The position has an initial appointment for 3 years and is renewable for five years after that.

We are looking to hire a faculty member who can teach courses in either energy or biotech focused agricultural technologies and global food security. For candidates in the area of energy, we seek someone who can teach a general overview of the US electricity system, covering topics such as generation, transmission, distribution, and storage. For candidates in the area of biotech, we seek someone who can teach the use of biologicals in agriculture or alternative proteins and their potential contributions to global food security. Biotech is a new direction for the Program, and we are interested in building up a larger focus area around environmental applications of biotechnology.

Successful candidates must be willing to teach at all undergraduate levels, including introductory courses through upper-level courses that include graduate students in their area of specialization. The position carries a 3-course load per semester requirement. One of these courses can be a client-based capstone that involves shepherding a group of approximately 20 seniors towards a deliverable for an environmental-, energy-, or biotech-related client.

We are open with regards to what the other courses could be but have needs for wide range of courses in energy, or any courses to aid in launching a program around the environmental applications of biotechnology and believe that agricultural or alternative protein technologies will be a good first step in this direction.

The Program has a strong reputation for experiential instruction - top candidates will be interested in fostering community partners and engaging students beyond the classroom. In addition to teaching, each position also includes advising E3P majors.

A Ph.D. is preferred, but we will also consider exceptional candidates with master's degrees in engineering, biotechnology, business administration, or public administration.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

Our mission is to understand and provide solutions to the most challenging resource issues facing our planet. We explore systems on our planet through basic research and applied solutions. We elevate research into understanding by investigating the diverse and interactive systems that regulate the environment, including consequences for humans and other organisms. We are committed to educating students to improve understanding for future generations.

Position Summary:

This Teaching Assistant Professor position will be responsible for teaching 3 courses per semester. This position will also advise E3P majors.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

A Ph.D. is preferred, but we will also consider exceptional candidates with Master's degrees in engineering, biotechnology, business administration, or public administration.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Degree in related area, teaching experience
