Job Title:Ultrafast Spectroscopy Research ScientistDepartment:ERIK | National eXtreme Ultrafast Science

The Ultrafast Spectroscopy Research Scientist will contribute to the operation and maintenance of the NeXUS facility, with specific responsibility for the ultrafast, extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopy systems that include capabilities for ultrafast XUV absorption, reflection, and magnetic circular dichroism; time-resolved photoionization measurements; and liquid sheet generation to support XUV measurements.

NSF NeXUS is a state-of-the-art user facility dedicated to studying material and molecular dynamics using ultrafast optical pulses (infrared to XUV/soft X-rays) and a variety of measurement instrumentation. The NeXUS facility includes three beamlines, with tailored ultrafast light in each, and multiple end stations supporting distinct analysis approaches. NeXUS is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and hosted at The Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio, USA). NeXUS is finishing its commissioning phase and entering its operational phase when it will host user experiments.

The Research Scientist will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and advancement of the ultrafast XUV spectroscopy systems. These systems are all custom-built within the last five years based on laboratory research systems. The beamline uses high harmonic generation to generate XUV pulses. The end stations support time resolved measurements using XUV absorption, XUV reflection, and photoionization detection. They support gaseous, solid, and liquid samples. The liquid samples employ a liquid sheet technology. The Research Scientist will have expert knowledge of the underlying physical principles of these experimental systems and measurements.

The Research Scientist will:

  • support NeXUS users in planning and conducting ultrafast spectroscopy experiments using the NeXUS Facility

  • maintain expert knowledge and skills that are on the forefront of ultrafast spectroscopy, science, and technology

  • complete experiments, hardware development, and/or software development that advance related scientific fields and benefit capabilities at NeXUS

  • work with the NeXUS staff to establish effective and efficient processes to operate and maintain NeXUS equipment, focused on the ultrafast XUV systems

  • cross train on other NeXUS equipment such as the ultrafast infrared lasers and high harmonic generation beamlines

  • conduct scientific or engineering research by proposing, executing, presenting, or publishing scientific results and technology development

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in experimental chemistry, physics, materials science, or optical engineering

  • Three years of demonstrated experience in operation and maintenance of an ultrafast XUV or ultrafast optical system (Can include work towards Ph.D.)

  • Three years of experience in the design, assembly, operation, and maintenance of laboratory scientific equipment that incorporates laser, optical, and vacuum technologies (Can include work towards Ph.D.)

  • Strong evidence of scholarship and independent scientific achievement in their field of expertise, such as a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • One year of relevant experimental research experience beyond the Ph.D. degree period.

  • Demonstrated experience in operation and maintenance of an additional NeXUS subsystem (list above) other than the Ultrafast X-Ray system.

  • Evidence of the ability to propose and lead research or development projects.

  • Demonstrated experience mentoring or managing technical staff (students, postdoctoral researchers, technicians, or other scientists).

To be considered for this position, a resume and cover letter must be submitted.
