Director of Belonging and Inclusion



The Director of Inclusion and Belonging within the Division of Student Affairs is a strategic leader responsible for advancing initiatives that foster an inclusive, equitable, and supportive campus environment. This role provides vision and direction for programs, policies, and practices that enhance a sense of belonging among all students, particularly those from underrepresented, marginalized, or historically excluded backgrounds. The Director collaborates with students to implement strategies that align with the university’s mission and core values, ensuring that the campus community is welcoming, inclusive, and respectful for all.

  • Lead the development and implementation of strategic initiatives that foster inclusion, equity, and belonging for all students.
  • Serve as an advocate for student needs related to inclusion and belonging, addressing individual and group concerns through outreach and support.
  • Analyze campus climate assessments, leveraging data to improve inclusivity initiatives and address areas of need.
  • Facilitate partnerships with campus departments, student organizations, and community groups to build collaborative efforts in promoting a diverse and inclusive campus culture.
  • Coordinate cultural and identity-based events, speaker series, and programs to enhance cross-cultural understanding and support a welcoming campus environment.
  • Collaborate with university leadership to develop, implement, and review policies that enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging (DEIAB) across the institution.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise Office of Inclusion and Belonging staff, fostering a team environment focused on inclusive and supportive practices.
  • Lead and develop staff who oversee programs that support underrepresented student populations, including mentoring, advocacy, and retention initiatives.
  • Develop and manage the department budget, ensuring the effective allocation of resources to support Office of Inclusion and Belonging initiatives and programming within the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Monitor and report on budget expenditures, seeking opportunities to maximize program impact while maintaining financial responsibility.
  • Collaborate with campus partners including the Office of Equity Diversity and Inclusion who are focused on cultivating a sense of belonging for all students
  • Partner with colleagues within the Division of Student Affairs including but not limited to, Residence Life, Student Success, Off Campus Student Services, and New Student Programs ensuring a holistic approach to student support.
  • Serve on Division of Student Affairs Senior Leadership team contributing to the overall success of the division.
  • Cultivate a campus environment that fosters belonging and support for students of all identities, including race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and socioeconomic background.

Essential Functions

Executes strategic alignment, long-term planning, operational planning, and management oversight of major college, campus, or University-wide student affairs functions. Establishes the direction, goals, implementation strategy, evaluation means, student initiatives, and policies of the department. Maintains responsibility for budgetary matters. Directs effective communications, promotions, and public relations for the department. Provides strategic alignment, long-term planning, and management oversight of major college, campus, or University-wide student affairs functions in areas including student affairs, student finance, admissions, student records, and study abroad programs. Translates strategic and tactical business plans into student operational plans. Establishes the direction, goals, implementation strategy, and policies of the department. Evaluates and improves Student Affairs’ programs; formulates and implements student policies; develops innovative strategies for providing student services; and employs practices that foster recruitment, retention, and enhancement of the overall quality of the student college experience. Formulates and administers the annual operating budget. Procures agreements for materials or services. Oversees and develops initiatives such as peer tutoring, academic coaching, transfer student success, reducing/eliminating academic disparities, and academic standing policies and procedures. Develops and maintains partnerships throughout the University. Advises senior administrators in implementing programs, new initiatives, and special projects. Oversees communications, promotions, and public relations for the department to achieve departmental goals and objectives. Ensures that all programs and activities comply with University, state, and federal regulations. Serves on various University, division, and departmental committees and represents the department at various state and national associations. Supervises staff, which includes hiring, performance reviews, and documenting disciplinary actions and other human resource administration. Manages work schedules and approves timecards. Provides professional development opportunities. Distributes and reviews work. Physical Effort

The role of Director of Belonging and Inclusion generally involves minimal physical effort. However, it may include the following:

  • Occasional travel between campus locations or to conferences and external events related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Participation in workshops, seminars, and meetings that may require standing or sitting for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of materials or supplies for events or presentations (up to 20 lbs).
  • The ability to engage in group discussions, workshops, and training sessions that may involve moving between venues, interacting with large groups, or speaking in front of an audience for extended periods.
