We have two visiting positions beginning July 1, 2025. Position I is a three-year Visiting Assistant Professor position (with a renewal after the first year), and Position II is a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position. These positions are aimed at recent Ph.D. recipients who have already exhibited excellence as instructors of record, and who wish to hone their pedagogical skills further in a liberal arts setting.
To be considered for a position, candidates should be recipients of a Ph.D. in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, and should have already demonstrated excellence and high potential as recent instructors of record in undergraduate courses at higher education institutions in the USA or Canada. Strong candidates who are on track to complete their degree prior
to September 1, 2025 may also be considered.
The successful candidates will teach under the mentorship of experienced members of the department. Course load is five (5) semester-long Calculus courses per year.
We aim to hire mathematicians who demonstrate evidence of maintaining an active research program, while being enthusiastic about teaching at a liberal arts institution, and contributing to the social and intellectual vibrancy of our
department.
To apply, please provide all of the following:
● A cover letter, which states which of the two position(s) you are applying for (expressing your preference if applying for both). The letter should address your specific reasons for seeking this position at Colby, which is a liberal arts institution.
● CV
● A maximum three-page statement on teaching introductory courses in mathematics, describing practical pedagogical strategies and concrete experiences of their implementation in your courses, as well as your commitment to equitable and inclusive teaching.
● All official summary evaluation sheets from the courses you taught in 2022 or later;
● A maximum two-page statement (aimed at Colby mathematicians) describing your current research program;
● At least three (3) letters of recommendation submitted directly by the recommenders, with at least two (2) focusing primarily on your teaching and mentoring experiences, and at least one (1) - on your scholarship.
All materials should be submitted online at www.mathjobs.org. Review of complete applications will begin on February 1, 2025, and will continue until the positions are filled. Selected candidates (for each of the two positions) may be asked to participate in Zoom interviews, and to provide a video recording of a mini-lecture on a given calculus topic. Some candidates may be invited to campus for on-site interviews.
