Travel: Required, 50% (Southern California)
The Construction Building Inspector will travel frequently to locations such as Ventura, Del Mar, San Bernardino, Lancaster, and Orange County. This role requires about 50% of the time spent on the road.
The inspector's main job is to check commercial buildings and structures during all stages of construction, alterations, and repairs. You will also help review building plans for permits and enforce building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, energy, and green building codes.
Responsibilities:
- Perform field inspections of construction, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work to ensure compliance with the rules.
- Review plans for minor changes and additions.
- Conduct final inspections once projects are completed.
- Investigate any violations of building laws.
- Keep logs and records of inspections; check plans to ensure they are complete; issue permits and collect fees.
- Provide the public with information about building codes and requirements.
- Write inspection reports and help resolve compliance disputes.
- Work with Code Compliance, Fire, Public Works, and other agencies to ensure compliance.
- Carry out other related tasks as needed.
Construction Building Inspector
Requirements:
Building Inspector I: You need a valid California Class C Driver's License and must obtain a valid ICC certification as a Commercial Building Inspector (or equivalent) certification under the ICBO legacy
program
OR
Building Inspector II / III: $100K-$120K: 3+years, In addition to the above, you must keep valid certifications as an Electrical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, and Mechanical Inspector.
Knowledge Required:
- Policies and procedures related to building inspection duties.
- Laws, codes, standards, and regulations for building construction and inspections.
- Basic principles and practices of construction trades, including general construction, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and energy codes.
- Effective inspection methods and computer software used for permits and inspections.
-While having a CASP certification is helpful, it is not mandatory.
