Responsibilities




  • Assist with a wide variety of complex experimental procedures involving microbiology, biomedical engineering, biochemistry, and immunology techniques to perform research and development. Techniques involved will include cell culture or fermentation, protein purification, protein conjugation, maintenance of cells stocks, etc. Other areas of expertise in conducting research may include SDS-PAGE, western blotting, microscopy, spectrophotometry, pH, conductivity, and media preparation.

  • Assist in the development of scalable fermentation (5L to 60L), purification and conjugation processes for production of recombinant malaria vaccines produced by Escherichia coli, Pichia pastoris and other cell lines.

  • Assist in the analysis of recombinant protein production quality and quantity after fermentation, harvesting, and purification.

  • Collect and organize data, perform data analysis, and prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols, batch production records, and inventories.

  • Write reports of findings resulting in a publishable manuscript, stating methods and materials, including any modifications employed, specimens and materials involved, results of experiments and discussion of results as it pertains to published literature.

  • Perform, operate and communicate effectively individually, and in a group, team-oriented working environment.

  • Responsible for laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment. Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, etc. required to handle biological materials, carcinogens, recombinant protein materials, acids, biological wastes, etc.




Qualifications




  • BS in biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biology, molecular biology or related field and two (2) or more years of related experience, or a MS in a similar field with limited experience.

  • Experience preparing laboratory protocols.

  • Experience with vaccine research and development is preferred.

  • Experience in protein conjugation.

  • Experience using fermenters, AKTA chromatography skids, shaking incubators or equivalent equipment is preferred.

  • Knowledge of current Good Laboratory Practices and current Good Manufacturing Practices is preferred.

  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours when experimental needs require working odd hours.

  • Strong computer skills including experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and graphics programs.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills working in a team atmosphere.
